Croatia has become a quietly compelling destination for Indians — an EU member state with a Mediterranean coastline, a lower cost of living than much of Western Europe, and a growing appetite for skilled professionals in tourism, IT, healthcare and shipbuilding. Since joining the European Union in 2013, and the Schengen Area and the Eurozone in January 2023, Croatia has folded fully into the European mainstream: a household or business shipment that clears Croatian customs is, in practical terms, inside the single market. For the Indian families and companies choosing Zagreb, Split or Rijeka, the appeal is a European base without the price or pace of Frankfurt or Amsterdam. An India–Croatia move is defined by its two ends. The India end means export customs clearance through ICEGATE at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai Port or Cochin, a shipping bill filed under the Customs Act, AD code registration with the originating port, and the careful packing of a home or office that will travel several thousand nautical miles before it reaches the Adriatic. The Croatian end means import clearance with Carinska uprava (the Croatian Customs Administration) under the EU Common Customs Tariff, the transfer-of-residence relief that removes duty and VAT on used personal effects, and the civic groundwork — the OIB personal identification number, residence registration and the residence permit — that makes a life in Croatia possible. Both ends have to be right, and they have to agree with each other.

The India–Croatia corridor

Sea freight carries the weight of this corridor. Container vessels from Nhava Sheva and Mundra reach Rijeka — Croatia’s principal deep-sea port on the northern Adriatic — on routes that run through the Mediterranean, with transit times that typically fall in a range of 28 to 38 days port to port depending on routing, transhipment and intermediate calls. Ploče, the southern Croatian port serving Dalmatia and the Bosnian hinterland, is an alternative gateway for some Dalmatian-coast destinations. Chennai Port and Cochin give South Indian origin cities their own sea route into the same Adriatic terminals. From Rijeka, onward road delivery reaches Zagreb, Split, Osijek, Zadar and any Croatian address, on a road network that is now part of the EU’s internal transport space.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) serves moves where the calendar cannot absorb sea transit. There are no direct passenger or freighter services on the India–Croatia route; shipments route through a European hub — commonly Frankfurt, Vienna, Istanbul or a Gulf gateway — before the final leg into Zagreb (ZAG).
