What makes this corridor distinctive from the Indian end

Moving from India means the export side is as important as the import side. Personal effects and household goods leaving India require a properly filed Shipping Bill on the ICEGATE electronic gateway and an export declaration submitted to Indian customs. The originating party needs a registered Authorised Dealer (AD) code with the gateway port through their banker, and for emigrating individuals and families the documentation should reflect the relevant FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) emigration-status context correctly. Commercial exporters need a valid GST LUT (Letter of Undertaking) for zero-rated exports, and may claim drawback or RoDTEP benefits where applicable. The route: India to Sweden

Swedish customs — what arrives at the other end

Sweden is an EU member state, which keeps it inside the single market for goods once they have cleared. Swedish customs is administered by Tullverket through the TDS electronic clearance system. The standard Swedish VAT (MOMS) rate of twenty-five per cent is one of the highest in the EU and applies to commercial imports along with any duty. For households moving permanently, Flyttgods — transfer-of-residence relief filed on Form Tv 740.20 — allows personal effects owned and used for at least six months before the move to enter free of duty and MOMS, provided the household is establishing genuine residence in Sweden. Personnummer — the keystone for life in Sweden

Almost every administrative task in Sweden depends on the personnummer, the ten-digit personal identity number issued by Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency). It is the gateway to a Swedish bank account, BankID digital identity, a mobile phone contract, a permanent residential lease, healthcare registration and the school enrolment process. Issuance can take several weeks from arrival, and there is no shortcut. We brief every relocating family or employee on the Skatteverket process at the start of the move so the personnummer application is ready to file the moment they land — not discovered as a problem in the second week.

Cold climate at the destination end

Most moves from India to Sweden are from warm-climate origins to cold-climate destinations. That temperature differential is not just a comfort question — it affects how goods are packed, how they travel, and what happens when a container or carton is opened in a Swedish winter. Electronics, wooden furniture and moisture-sensitive items all need specific consideration. Households also need to think practically about winter clothing: the wardrobe that worked in Mumbai or Chennai will not survive a Stockholm February, and parkas, insulated boots and base layers are best bought in Sweden where the sizing and ratings reflect the climate.
