When you need machinery moving (and when you don’t)
A standard office removal is not machinery moving — desks, chairs, a photocopier and a few server cabinets travel on a tail-lift van and any reputable mover handles it. The discipline changes the moment an asset exceeds roughly one tonne, carries factory-set calibration, or needs rigging beyond a standard counterbalance forklift. Factory consolidation across two MIDC plots, a CNC export to a German receiver against an EPCG obligation, a hospital imaging upgrade with an OEM commissioning slot, a data-centre cabinet move in a Bengaluru tower — project moves, costed against an engineering survey rather than a per-tonne rate card. If the answer to “what happens if we drop it” involves a calibration engineer flying in, you are on the right page.
The pre-move survey carries the project
Before any quotation is firm, an engineer visits both ends. The survey records floor loading at every rest point — a 14–18 tonne machining centre on an office-grade slab needs load-spreading plates, calculated against kg-per-m². Doorways and corridors measured with 50 mm clearance for skating gear; overhead clearances checked for spindle nose, gantry travel and crane hook approach. Where a roof opening or wall panel removal is needed, the decision is recorded before the date is locked.
The output is a method statement and risk assessment covering lifting plan, rigging, disassembly sequence and phasing. For medical imaging, calibrated metrology and semiconductor tooling, it is reviewed against the OEM relocation specification so warranty is preserved. Industrial estate landlords (MIDC, KINFRA, SIPCOT) and SEZ authorities often require approval before the work date.

Hydraulic jacking & skating
Toe-jacks rated to 25 tonnes, machine skates and Hilman rollers under load points marked on the survey — the standard mechanism where overhead lift is not available.
Mobile & tower cranes
Mobile telescopic cranes from 25 to 250 tonnes for yard lifts and roof openings; self-erecting tower cranes for multi-floor installations. Lift plans signed by the appointed person.
Air casters & precision skates
For cleanrooms and epoxy floors where the surface must survive intact — load spread across a wide footprint with no surface mark.
Gantries, forklifts & rigging
A-frame gantries where a crane cannot reach, forklifts to 16 tonnes, chain blocks, slings and spreader bars certified to the working load.
When a move becomes project cargo
Domestic moves run on flatbed or low-loader trailers with state RTO over-dimension permits and pilot vehicles where the consignment exceeds standard road envelope. International freight is itself a project decision. Container shipping suits most machine tools once dismantled; flat-rack and open-top containers handle assets exceeding standard height or width; RoRo carries wheeled or tracked plant from Chennai (Ennore). Breakbulk and OOG shipment via chartered heavy-lift vessels handles assets that cannot be containerised — large presses, transformers above 40 tonnes, production-line modules. Nhava Sheva (JNPT) and Mundra carry the highest sailing frequency; Chennai, Cochin and Vishakhapatnam serve southern origins. Antonov AN-124 or 747F charter ex BOM, DEL, BLR or MAA carries oversized airfreight where the schedule will not allow sea.
Indian export documentation
The shipping bill is filed on ICEGATE under the correct HS classification — chapters 84 and 85 cover most machinery and electrical apparatus, and misclassification is the most common cause of clearance hold. AD code registration with the originating port is confirmed before booking. Where the asset was imported under EPCG, the export obligation is reconciled with DGFT before the consignment moves; SCOMET licensing applies to dual-use items. GST runs on LUT cover for zero-rated exports, drawback on the duty paid component, refund positions on capital goods. Where the move is part of a corporate re-domicile or related-party asset transfer, FEMA and RBI implications are worked through with the client’s treasury advisers ahead of mobilisation.
Destination customs and insurance
The corridor sets the import regime: ATLAS to Zoll for Germany, CHIEF/CDS for the UK, the Union Customs Code across the EU, US CBP for North America, ABF for Australia. Importer of Record cover is arranged where the consignee is not yet established. Every move runs against a marine cargo or inland transit policy with all-risks cover above a defined threshold, and pre-move condition reports carry photo evidence: existing wear, calibration sticker dates, serial numbers. For tenancy exits, a dilapidation survey protects the lease return.
Three operational scenarios
Corporate relocation, Pune to Bengaluru. A precision engineering firm shifting head office and pilot workshop — desks plus a server room (two racks, in-row cooler, UPS frame) and a workshop with a turning centre, vertical mill and two CMMs. Server room staged over a weekend: racks de-cabled and labelled, crated, set down and re-cabled with the client IT team Sunday evening. Workshop assets on a low-loader with route permits cleared in advance, re-levelled before engineers arrive Monday.
Production line export, Mumbai region to Southeast Asia. A manufacturer consolidating two facilities, 30-station line that must clear Indian customs on schedule and arrive ready for assembly. The survey identifies which stations move whole and which need partial disassembly; method statement sets disassembly sequence and reverse build order. Crating engineered for sea transit through Nhava Sheva on flat-rack and open-top containers, OOG components on a heavy-lift sailing. Shipping bill filed under chapter 84, EPCG reconciled, programme held through to the receiver.
Specialist single asset: a CT scanner. A multi-specialty hospital in Kochi receiving a refurbished scanner from a clinic up-country. OEM engineer engaged for power-down and calibration. Route survey covers goods-lift capacity, doorway widths and ramp gradients. Air casters across the diagnostic floor; transport on an air-ride trailer to limit vibration on the magnet. RF-shielded room sign-off and OEM recommissioning before the scanner returns to patient use.
Industry scenarios from the field
CNC line across the Chakan belt
A tier-two supplier shifting six VMCs and a horizontal machining centre eight kilometres across Chakan, line booked to be cutting again within nine working days. Ms. the coordinator ran the survey at both sites in a day, flagged grouting under three bedplates at the receiving slab, locked a sequence that took the spindles out under chain-block restraint rather than gantry. The longest machine travelled on a 40-foot low-loader against a Maharashtra RTO over-dimension permit; OEM-tolerance re-levelling signed off before the calibration engineer arrived.
Cabinet migration between Whitefield campuses
Eighteen production cabinets — mixed compute, storage, an in-row cooler — moved between two Whitefield carrier-neutral facilities inside the customer-facing SLA window. Ms. the coordinator built the runbook against the client change calendar: cabinets de-cabled to a port-map sheet, transported in convoy on air-ride trucks with an escort, set down on the marked footprint, re-cabled with client network engineers on a Saturday-night maintenance window. Power-up landed before the Sunday go-live check.
630-tonne press, Ambattur to GST Road
A stamping operator retiring a leased shed in Ambattur, consolidating into an owned facility down the GST Road, mechanical press as the heaviest single asset, fixed handover on the old lease. Ms. the coordinator split the press into crown, slide and bed for road movement, planned the lift on a 250-tonne mobile crane against a wind window, routed the trailer through Tamil Nadu RTO permits with a pilot vehicle. Press bolted down, levelled and ready for the electrician inside the consolidation schedule.
How a project move runs
- Engineering survey. Floor loading, access routes, lift points and disassembly recorded at both sites; landlord, SEZ or estate approvals flagged before the date is locked.
- Method statement & permits. You receive the method statement, lifting plan, risk assessment and programme. RTO over-dimension permits, gate passes and ICEGATE filings raised in advance.
- Crating, lift & transport. Export-grade crating where international, rigging and skating along the surveyed route, lift onto transport with marine surveyor sign-off on higher-value loads.
- Set-down & recommissioning. Equipment positioned to the marked footprint, re-levelled where the OEM requires it, handed over for power-up.

EPCG implications when relocating a CNC against an export obligation?
The EPCG licence ties capital goods to an export obligation with DGFT. Moving the machine within India under the same IEC is straightforward; exporting before the obligation is discharged needs a written DGFT position — obligation transfer, early closure on duty repayment, or an amended licence. We raise this at survey and brief your CHA before booking.
How does BIS-CDSCO apply to imported equipment?
BIS under the Compulsory Registration Scheme covers a notified list of electronics and electrical apparatus; CDSCO covers medical devices under the MDR. For a used CT scanner or refurbished CNC we confirm whether the asset is notified, whether refurbished-goods authorisation is needed, and whether the consignee has registered importer status — otherwise we route through an Importer of Record before the cargo sails.
Nhava Sheva or Mundra for project cargo?
Both carry deep-sea services and OOG handling; the answer depends on origin geography, sailing frequency to the destination, and yard congestion that week. Nhava Sheva usually shortens the road leg from MIDC Pune, Aurangabad and Mumbai; Mundra often gives faster transit to West Asia and the Mediterranean with more open space for breakbulk staging. Which ICEGATE shipping bill heading applies?
Most machine tools, presses, moulders, packaging lines and lifting equipment sit under chapter 84; electrical apparatus, generators, transformers, switchgear and most data-centre assets under chapter 85. The eight-digit heading is what matters — horizontal and vertical machining centres fall under different sub-headings — and a misfiled bill is the most common cause of clearance hold.
How much does machinery moving cost in India?
Pricing is engineered against the survey, not a per-tonne rate card — cost drivers are rigging method, route permits, crating, port handling and freight choice rather than gross weight. A single CNC moved 200 km on a low-loader sits in a different bracket from a thirty-station line on flat-racks via Nhava Sheva. We quote against the method statement and hold the price unless the survey assumption changes.
Do you handle decommissioning?
Yes, with OEM engagement where needed. Hydraulic and dielectric fluids drained against OEM procedure and disposed of through a CPCB-authorised handler; coolant tanks pumped down before the machine moves; data-centre assets powered down with the client IT team. Where warranty depends on OEM-certified disconnect — many imaging systems and high-end metrology — we book the engineer into the programme.
Can you ship medical imaging equipment internationally?
Yes, with three caveats. The OEM relocation specification governs the method — particularly MRI magnets, where ramp-down or persistent-mode transport is a binary decision made early. The destination’s medical device regime sets the paperwork: FDA notification for the US, MDR registration for the EU, MHRA for the UK. And the receiving site must be ready before the asset arrives.
How long does a factory consolidation take?
A two-site to one-site consolidation with twenty to forty machines typically runs ten to sixteen weeks from survey to last-machine-recommissioned. Survey and method statement take two to three weeks; permits, crating and freight booking another two to three; the physical lift, transport and re-installation runs in waves so the receiver is never idle.
What does the insurance cover?
Marine cargo with all-risks handles physical loss or damage in transit, including loading and unloading, against an agreed value declared at booking. Consequential loss — lost production, missed customer orders — sits outside and needs a separate business interruption arrangement through the client’s broker. Pre-existing condition is excluded, which is why photo condition reports at origin matter.
Do you handle weekend turnarounds?
Routinely. Data-centre and hospital work is largely weekend and overnight by nature, and several automotive moves run across long weekends to avoid weekday production loss. The constraint is usually the receiving site — building access, lift availability, calibration engineer rostering — rather than our crew.
