Freight routes and customs
Every Thailand move starts at the India end: an export shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration with the dispatching port or airport, and a detailed packing list and valued inventory. Sea freight handles household and commercial volumes — containers leave Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and sail to Laem Chabang, Thailand’s main deep-sea port serving Bangkok, with the Bangkok Port (Khlong Toei) handling smaller consignments. Transit times typically run two to four weeks port to port. Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) into Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) suits time-critical moves, with direct services keeping flying time under five hours.
At the Thai end, clearance is handled by the Thai Customs Department under the Ministry of Finance. Returning Thai nationals and certain long-stay visa holders can claim relief on used household and personal effects under Thailand’s transfer-of-residence provisions, subject to ownership, use and visa conditions and a complete inventory. We confirm the documentary and visa-linked position before booking, because Thai customs treatment depends closely on the holder’s visa category.
