A corridor shaped by Indian origin

The India–UAE move is sea and air, from start to finish. There is no land route. A household moving from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Pune or Ahmedabad reaches Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah by container ship through Jebel Ali Port, or by air through Dubai International or Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport. The sea route is the workhorse for full-household volumes; air is the mode for urgency, high-value items, and situations where the ship schedule does not fit the move date.

The Indian origin matters as much as the UAE destination. Before anything reaches Jebel Ali or the Dubai cargo terminal, it must clear Indian customs as an export. Personal effects and household goods leaving India require a shipping bill, an export declaration, and documentation that reflects the emigrating individual’s FEMA status correctly. How a move from India to the UAE runs

1. Survey in India. We assess your household, cargo or freight at your Indian origin city and recommend sea, air or a combination for your move date and budget.
2. Prepare the Indian export file. Shipping bill, export declaration and any supporting documentation are prepared at the Indian origin before anything is packed.
3. Pack and ship. Our crew packs to export standard at the Indian premises; the consignment is dispatched from the gateway port or airport on the booked route to the UAE.
4. Clear and deliver in the UAE. UAE customs clearance at Jebel Ali or the destination airport is managed; we coordinate delivery and unpacking at your Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah address.

Transit times, frequency and gateway choice

The India–UAE corridor is one of the shortest international moves we run. Sea freight from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) to Jebel Ali runs about five to nine days port to port, with multiple weekly sailings from Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and ONE; Mundra to Jebel Ali sits in the same window for shipments routed through Gujarat. Chennai and Cochin sail through transhipment hubs and typically run a few days longer. Air freight from BOM, DEL, BLR, MAA, COK or HYD to DXB, AUH or SHJ is around three to three-and-a-half hours in the air; with Emirates, Etihad, IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Vistara and SpiceJet all running the route, lift is rarely the constraint — the constraint is gateway slotting at peak season. We book lift early on this corridor because the volume of Indian-origin freight moving into Dubai every week is consistently high.

Indian export — ICEGATE, AD code and FEMA in plain terms

Every household consignment leaving India is filed as an export on ICEGATE, the Indian customs portal. The shipping bill carries the consignor’s details, the AD code of the authorised dealer bank handling the foreign exchange leg, an itemised inventory valuation, and a declaration consistent with the consignor’s FEMA status — resident emigrating, non-resident Indian moving residence, or returning expatriate. For households where the move is funded through a salary remittance or where the consignor holds an NRE/NRO account, the documentation has to align with the FEMA category claimed; we prepare that file at the Indian gateway as a standard step so it stands up to scrutiny if customs queries the entry.

UAE arrival — Mirsal 2, 5% duty and 5% VAT

At Jebel Ali, the import declaration goes through Mirsal 2, the UAE Federal Customs Authority’s electronic clearance system. Personal effects on a residence visa typically attract a 5% UAE import duty — the standard GCC common external tariff — and 5% UAE VAT on the assessed value, although used personal effects accompanying a first-time UAE resident often qualify for relief subject to the documentation submitted. We prepare the Mirsal 2 entry with the duty and VAT position established up front so there are no surprises at the port; for households importing through a free-zone address, the treatment differs and we set that out in writing before the container sails.

The Indian community context

Around 3.5 million Indians live in the UAE — roughly 35% of the country’s population and the largest single national community anywhere in the Gulf. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat are all heavily represented; neighbourhoods like Bur Dubai, Karama, Deira and Al Nahda (Sharjah) function almost as Indian quarters within the UAE. For most new arrivals this means the cultural transition is gentle — familiar food, schools teaching the Indian curriculum, places of worship and professional networks are all in place.
