Sea freight and air freight: the only two routes

India and Saudi Arabia are separated by the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea — there is no land route. Every household shipment, every commercial consignment, every piece of freight on this corridor travels by sea or by air. Sea transits typically run ten to fourteen days from Nhava Sheva or Mundra into Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdul Aziz Port at Dammam; direct flights from BOM, DEL, BLR, MAA or COK reach JED, RUH or DMM in four to five hours on Saudia, Air India, IndiGo and flynas. Planning is measured in weeks by sea, not hours by road, and the export documentation process in India is the first critical step, not an afterthought.

The Indian export process

Moving goods out of India is a formal export under Indian customs law. A shipping bill is filed on ICEGATE at the originating port or Inland Container Depot, the exporter’s AD code is registered against the port, FEMA declarations are aligned where relevant, and goods are examined and cleared by Indian customs before the shipment moves. For commercial consignments, a GST LUT (Letter of Undertaking) lets the goods leave India without IGST being paid upfront. This is not a burden — it is a process we run every week — but it needs lead time, accurate documentation and a full inventory of what is in the shipment. We prepare everything at the India end so the export side is clean before the Saudi import side begins.

Saudi customs: what to expect on arrival

Saudi Arabia clears imports electronically through the FASAH platform. New consumer goods, electronics and many industrial items require SABER conformity registration before arrival; the GCC common external tariff applies at five per cent on most goods, and a fifteen per cent Saudi VAT is levied on the landed value. Personal effects accompanying a relocating expatriate attract specific treatment when documentation is correctly prepared at the India end. Iqama (residence permit) status, sponsored by the Saudi employer, governs many aspects of clearance and onward delivery — we time the freight so it does not arrive ahead of the Iqama paperwork.
