Moving to Rwanda

Rwanda has no coastline. Every container bound for Kigali first arrives at an East African port and then travels overland through a neighbouring country. Seemleius plans that combined sea-and-road journey from the start, so the transit time is realistic and the India-side export clearance is finished long before the shipment reaches Africa.

Freight routes and customs

The India end begins with export clearance: a shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration with the originating port and an export-standard packing list and invoice. Sea freight departs from Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin. Containers for Rwanda are routed to the East African coast — most commonly the Port of Mombasa in Kenya, or Dar es Salaam in Tanzania — with ocean transit typically in the range of 18 to 26 days, after which the shipment moves overland to Kigali along the Northern or Central Corridor, adding several days for the inland leg and border formalities.

From Mombasa, cargo travels by road through the Malaba or Gatuna crossings into Rwanda. Air freight moves from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) into Kigali International Airport via a Gulf or East African hub. Customs clearance is handled by the Rwanda Revenue Authority through its electronic single-window system. Returning residents and qualified immigrants may import used household effects under transfer-of-residence provisions, and we confirm eligibility before the shipment departs India.
