Portugal has become one of the most sought-after destinations in Europe for Indian families and professionals, and the reasons are not hard to find: a temperate Atlantic climate, a comparatively gentle cost of living for a Western European country, English widely spoken in cities, and a residence framework — led by the D7 income-based visa and the various skilled-work routes — that has made the country genuinely accessible to applicants from India. The corridor is younger than India’s long-established links with the United Kingdom or Germany, but it is growing quickly, and the people making the move tend to have planned it with care over a year or more. The physical relocation of a home or a business deserves the same care. Seemleius exists to make sure the logistics keep pace with the decision.

An India–Portugal move has two halves, and both have to be handled properly. The India end means export customs clearance through ICEGATE, a shipping bill filed under the Customs Act at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai Port or Cochin, AD code registration against the originating port, and the careful packing of a household or office for a sea voyage that runs the length of the Arabian Sea, around the Iberian Peninsula and into the Atlantic. The Portugal end means clearance with the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (the Portuguese tax and customs authority), the 23% IVA import VAT question, and the transfer-of-residence relief that — when correctly claimed — exempts used personal effects from import duty and VAT for people genuinely transferring their main residence to Portugal. Get the India end wrong and the Portugal end inherits the problem; that is why we coordinate both as a single piece of work.

The India–Portugal corridor

Sea freight is the backbone of this route for household and commercial volumes. Container vessels from Nhava Sheva and Mundra reach Portugal’s Atlantic ports — Lisbon (Lisboa), Leixões near Porto, and the deep-water hub of Sines — on services that usually tranship at a Mediterranean or Northern European hub rather than running direct. Realistic port-to-port transit is typically in the range of 26 to 38 days depending on routing and the number of intermediate calls. Chennai Port and Cochin serve origin cities in South India well. From the discharge port, onward road delivery reaches Lisbon, Porto, Cascais, Braga, Coimbra, Faro and addresses across the Algarve and the interior.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) into Lisbon (LIS) or Porto (OPO) serves moves where the timeline cannot absorb sea transit. There is no direct passenger or freighter service between India and Portugal, so air cargo routes via a European or Gulf hub, putting a shipment on the ground in Portugal within a few days of dispatch. We are candid about the cost: air freight is several times the per-kilogram cost of sea, and the right choice depends on whether your visa appointment, residence registration or job start allows the slower mode.

Why the India end matters so much

Indian export clearance

Shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration, FEMA-aware documentation and Indian customs clearance managed at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai Port or Cochin — so the shipment leaves India correctly and any GST refund or LUT position is preserved.

Portugal’s customs regime

EU import declarations to the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, EORI registration where required, 23% IVA VAT treatment confirmed in advance, and the transfer-of-residence relief claimed accurately for genuine change-of-residence shipments.

Sea and air options

Sea via Lisbon, Leixões or Sines for household and commercial volumes (typically 26 to 38 days); air via Lisbon or Porto through a European or Gulf hub when the schedule does not allow a sea voyage.

One coordinator, both ends

The same person manages your India packing survey, ICEGATE shipping bill and export documentation, sea or air dispatch, and Portuguese delivery — no handover gap between origin and destination.

Who moves on this corridor

  • D7 visa holders and passive-income applicants — retirees, remote earners and families relocating on Portugal’s income-based residence route, often settling in Lisbon, Cascais, the Algarve or the Silver Coast
  • Skilled professionals and remote workers — IT engineers, consultants and digital professionals from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi NCR, including those arriving on the digital-nomad and skilled-work residence routes
  • Students and academics — admissions to the University of Lisbon, University of Porto, Nova University Lisbon, the University of Coimbra and the country’s growing English-taught postgraduate programmes
  • Indian businesses — companies establishing a European base in Lisbon or Porto, drawn by the talent pool, EU market access and the cost advantage over other Western European capitals

Where we deliver in Portugal

We move regularly to all of Portugal’s main destinations and their surrounding areas: Lisbon and the wider metropolitan region including Cascais, Sintra and Oeiras; Porto and the north including Vila Nova de Gaia and Matosinhos; Braga and the Minho; Coimbra and the centre; Faro, Lagos, Albufeira and the Algarve coast; and the Silver Coast towns favoured by relocating families. Wherever your shipment lands, the new arrival’s early administrative steps in Portugal — obtaining a NIF (número de identificação fiscal) tax number and completing residence registration with the local câmara municipal — shape the timeline, and we plan the delivery around them. If your destination is not listed here, ask us; we deliver across the whole country, including Madeira and the Azores.

Starting the move

  1. India-side survey. We assess volume and contents at your home or office in India — in person in the major cities, or by video — and return a clear quote with sea and air options explained, including realistic Lisbon or Leixões arrival windows.
  2. Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations relevant to your move. We do not leave this to the last week.
  3. Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard from your India origin, and the shipment is booked and dispatched on the confirmed route to Lisbon, Leixões, Sines or, by air, into Lisbon or Porto.
  4. Clear and deliver in Portugal. We manage the EU import clearance with the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, advise on the transfer-of-residence relief, and coordinate onward road delivery to your address anywhere in Portugal.

Choose the guide below that fits your situation — commercial freight, a corporate or office move, an employee relocation programme, a household and family move, or pets and vehicles — or request a quote and your coordinator will walk you through the right starting point for a move from India to Portugal.
