Belgium occupies a particular place on the map of Indian emigration: it is small, central, multilingual and disproportionately connected to the rest of Europe. For Indian families and professionals, the appeal is rarely Belgium alone — it is Belgium as a base. Brussels hosts the European Commission, the Council of the European Union and the headquarters of NATO, and the international civil service that surrounds those institutions has drawn Indian-origin professionals, contractors and their families for decades. Antwerp, meanwhile, is bound to India by one of the oldest commercial threads either country has — the diamond trade, in which Gujarati families have held a central position for generations. The move from India to Belgium is, more often than not, the logistical expression of a decision tied to one of those two worlds. Seemleius exists to make that logistics as considered as the decision behind it.
An India–Belgium move begins, like every move we run, at the Indian end. Export customs clearance is filed through ICEGATE — the Indian Customs electronic gateway — with the shipping bill prepared under the Customs Act, AD code registered against the originating port, and the household or office packed to survive a sea journey of well over 6,000 nautical miles. The quality of that Indian-side preparation determines how smoothly the Belgian end runs. Once the container reaches the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the Belgian process begins: import declaration to Belgian customs within the EU Union Customs Code framework, the 21% Belgian VAT (BTW/TVA) question, and the transfer-of-residence relief that — correctly claimed — exempts used personal effects from import duty and VAT for people genuinely moving their normal residence into the EU.
The India–Belgium corridor
Sea freight carries the great majority of household and commercial volume on this route. Container vessels from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) and Mundra in western India, and from Chennai Port and Cochin in the south, sail to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges — one of the largest ports in Europe and the natural deep-sea gateway for India-origin cargo bound for Belgium and its neighbours. Transit times are typically in the range of 22 to 30 days port to port, depending on the routing and whether the vessel calls at transhipment hubs such as Jebel Ali, Salalah or a Mediterranean port. Zeebrugge, now part of the merged Antwerp-Bruges authority, adds further capacity and is the principal Belgian gateway for vehicles and roll-on roll-off cargo. From Antwerp, onward road delivery reaches Brussels, Ghent, Leuven, Bruges and every Belgian address comfortably within a day.
Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) into Brussels Airport (BRU) serves moves where the calendar cannot absorb a sea crossing. A shipment can be on the ground in Belgium within roughly 9 to 11 hours of flying, often via a one-stop routing, with consolidated belly-hold and dedicated freighter options available. We are open with clients about the cost gap — air freight typically runs several times the per-kilogram cost of sea — and we help you weigh that against the reality of your visa date, your employer’s start date or the school term.
Why the India end matters so much
Indian export clearance
Shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration, FEMA-aware documentation and Indian customs clearance handled at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin — so the shipment leaves India correctly and any GST or LUT position is protected.
Belgian customs & VAT
Import declarations to Belgian customs under the Union Customs Code, EORI registration where required, and the 21% BTW/TVA position confirmed in advance — with transfer-of-residence relief claimed accurately for genuine residence moves.
Sea and air options
Sea via Antwerp-Bruges for household and commercial volumes (around 22 to 30 days); air via Brussels Airport when the schedule will not stretch to a sea crossing (roughly 9 to 11 flying hours).
One coordinator, both ends
The same person manages your India packing survey, ICEGATE shipping bill and export documentation, sea or air dispatch, and Belgian delivery — so nothing is lost in a handover between origin and destination.
Who moves on this corridor
- EU institution and international professionals — staff, contractors and consultants working with the European Commission, the Council, NATO and the wide ecosystem of agencies, law firms, lobby groups and think tanks clustered in Brussels
- Skilled-worker and Single Permit holders — engineers, IT specialists, researchers and healthcare professionals moving to Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Leuven on Belgium’s combined work-and-residence Single Permit
- Diamond and trade families — the long-established Indian, and especially Gujarati, community in Antwerp’s diamond district, alongside import-export businesses with European operations
- Students and academics — admissions to KU Leuven, Ghent University, the universities of Brussels and the international programmes that draw a steady flow of Indian students each year
Where we deliver in Belgium
We move regularly to all of Belgium’s main cities and the regions around them: Brussels and its multilingual capital region, including the EU quarter and the residential communes that ring it; Antwerp and its port-and-diamond economy; Ghent and Bruges in Flanders; Leuven with its university; and the Walloon cities to the south. Belgium’s three official languages — Dutch, French and German — mean that local administration differs by region, and that registration at the commune or gemeente is handled in the language of that municipality. We are familiar with how the residence-registration sequence plays out city by city. If your destination is not listed here, ask us — we deliver across the whole country.
Starting the move
- India-side survey. We assess the volume and contents at your home or office in India — in person in the major cities, or by video — and return a clear quote setting out sea and air options with realistic Antwerp or Brussels arrival windows.
- Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared in good time: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations relevant to your move.
- Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard from your India origin, and the shipment is booked and dispatched on the confirmed route to Antwerp-Bruges or Brussels Airport.
- Clear and deliver in Belgium. We manage Belgian import clearance, advise on transfer-of-residence relief, and coordinate onward road delivery to your address in Belgium.
