The move begins at the India end. Export clearance is handled through ICEGATE, with the shipping bill filed under the Customs Act and AD code registration completed at the originating port. Sea freight departs Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin, routed to a Pacific transhipment hub — usually Suva — before a feeder service completes the leg to Funafuti. Realistic door-to-door transit is long and connection-dependent, commonly running seven to eleven weeks. Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) routes via Fiji or Australia onto the limited Funafuti service, and suits only urgent, low-volume consignments.

At the Tuvalu end, customs is administered by the Tuvalu Customs and Revenue Department. Tuvalu permits relief on used household goods imported by people taking up residence, where the items are owned and used before the move and accompanied by a clear inventory and proof of relocation. Because Funafuti’s handling capacity is modest, accurate paperwork is essential to avoid delay on arrival.
