Because direct sailings from India to Dili are rare, sea freight is routed via a regional transhipment hub — typically Singapore or a port in Indonesia — with containers leaving Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and feedered onward to the Port of Dili. Transit times realistically run four to eight weeks port to port depending on connection schedules. Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) routes via a Southeast Asian hub into Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport (DIL) for time-critical or smaller consignments.

At the Timorese end, clearance is handled by the Customs Authority of Timor-Leste (Autoridade Aduaneira). Returning nationals and approved long-stay arrivals can claim relief on used household and personal effects under transfer-of-residence provisions, subject to ownership and use conditions and a complete inventory.
