Employee Relocation to the UAE

Employee relocation from India to the UAE for HR and mobility teams — Indian export documentation per move, UAE customs handled, consistent programme management across all Indian origin cities.

Indian professionals relocating to the UAE on employer-sponsored moves represent one of the largest single employee-relocation flows in the world. For the HR and global mobility teams managing that volume, the challenge is not a single move — it is the programme: consistent policy across employees from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad; Indian export documentation that varies by origin city and emigration status; UAE customs clearance that depends on where in the UAE the employee is going; and a sea transit that is short enough to plan tightly but still requires lead time. Seemleius manages the India–UAE employee relocation programme with all of those variables built into the standard process.

Why India-origin moves add specific programme complexity

Every employee moving from India to the UAE carries household goods out of India through the formal export process: a shipping bill, an export declaration, and documentation consistent with their FEMA status. For employees on employment visas, that status is typically clear; for employees who have previously worked in the UAE and are returning, or who have family members joining on a different visa category, the documentation picture can be more nuanced. We assess each employee’s Indian export documentation requirements at the survey stage and prepare the correct file accordingly — HR does not need to understand Indian customs law to run this programme.

UAE destination variables — what HR needs to know

Where in the UAE an employee is going affects how their goods are cleared. An employee joining a free-zone company in JAFZA or a DMCC entity is on a different customs path from an employee joining a mainland Dubai or Abu Dhabi employer. The sea freight arrival point is typically Jebel Ali for Dubai and Sharjah destinations; for Abu Dhabi, the routing may differ. We establish the UAE destination details at initiation and prepare the correct UAE customs documentation before the shipment departs India, so there are no clearance surprises at the UAE end.

Indian export file per employee

Shipping bill and FEMA-consistent export declaration prepared for every move, at every Indian origin city — Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Pune or Ahmedabad.

UAE destination-matched customs

Import documentation prepared for the correct UAE customs path — free zone or mainland, Dubai or Abu Dhabi — before the shipment leaves India.

One coordinator per employee

The relocating employee in India has a single contact from survey to UAE delivery. Their questions come to us, not to HR.

The employee experience on this corridor

For most Indian professionals, moving to the UAE is a familiar trajectory even if they have not made the move before — the corridor is so well established that most people know someone who has done it. What they are less prepared for is the paperwork that governs the household goods export from India. Employees are sometimes surprised to learn that their furniture and effects need an export clearance before they can leave. We explain this clearly at the survey meeting in India, gather the documents we need, and handle the process so the employee’s experience is one of preparation and calm rather than last-minute scramble.

How the programme runs

  1. Align the programme. We map your mobility policy to the India–UAE corridor: entitlements, sea-versus-air split rules, UAE destination provisions, Indian export documentation requirements. Every subsequent move runs to that framework.
  2. Initiate each move. HR refers the employee; we contact them in India, survey their home, explain the export process and UAE customs, and return a policy-checked quote for approval.
  3. Manage the relocation. Indian export clearance, packing, sea or air freight, UAE customs and delivery to the UAE address are coordinated for the employee. HR receives milestone updates.
  4. Report. A consistent documentation set for each completed move — survey, inventory, export clearance records, UAE customs, invoice — is provided for your finance and mobility records.

UAE employment visa, Emirates ID and the certificate-attestation chain

Most Indian-passport employees moving to the UAE arrive on an employer-sponsored employment visa, with the sponsoring entity holding the establishment card and processing the entry permit through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in the relevant emirate. On arrival, the employee completes a medical fitness test, biometrics and the Emirates ID enrolment — the Emirates ID becomes the universal identity document for everything from a tenancy contract to a SIM card. For accompanying family, attestation is the step that catches new movers out: marriage certificates, birth certificates and degree certificates need to pass through MEA Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore, the UAE Embassy in New Delhi or Consulate in Mumbai, and finally the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs on arrival. A Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from the Indian state of origin is increasingly requested for visa categories above entry-level. We brief the employee on the chain at survey stage so the family file is ready by the time the container reaches Jebel Ali.

Housing — where Indian families settle in the UAE

Housing choice on the India–UAE corridor follows community and commute. In Dubai, Bur Dubai, Karama and Al Nahda remain heartlands of the Indian community — older buildings, walkable to schools and temples, strong community feel; Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) and Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC) are the modern-apartment options favoured by younger professional families; Mirdif and Al Warqa suit those wanting villa space with shorter commutes. In Abu Dhabi, Khalifa City and Al Reem Island are the practical choices for Indian professionals working in the central business district or on the islands. In Sharjah, Al Majaz and Al Nahda offer larger apartments at lower rents with a quick bridge into Dubai. We coordinate delivery and unpacking to whichever address the employee’s tenancy contract names — the Mirsal 2 entry and the address of destination are linked in the customs file.

Indian schooling in the UAE

For families relocating with school-age children, continuity of curriculum is often the single biggest concern, and the UAE has one of the densest networks of Indian-curriculum schools anywhere outside India itself. The Indian High School in Dubai, GEMS Modern Academy, Delhi Private School (DPS) Sharjah and DPS Dubai, JSS Private School, Springdales Dubai, Our Own English High School, and Ambassador School all teach to the CBSE or ICSE curriculum and recognise Indian transfer certificates; admissions usually require a Transfer Certificate (TC) from the previous school, attested mark sheets and the parents’ UAE residence visa copies. We time deliveries around the start of the UAE academic year — typically late August or early September — so the children’s rooms are unpacked in good time for the first day.

Whether you move fifteen employees a year from India to the UAE or manage a continuous programme across six Indian cities, the process is the same for each person. Talk to us about your mobility policy and we will structure the programme around it.

Common questions about this move

Contact us
How long does a move to the UAE take?

Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.

Do you handle customs at both ends?

Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.

Is my shipment insured in transit?

Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.

Will I have one point of contact?

Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
