A data centre relocation is rarely about the distance travelled. The hard part sits at either end of the road — the live estate that has to go quiet in the right order, and the room it has to wake up in without a port crossed or a drive lost. India's data centre map has shifted quickly: Navi Mumbai and the wider Mumbai cluster carry the bulk of the country's capacity and the subsea cable landings, Chennai has become a second landing and growth hub, and Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune and the NCR belt around Noida and Greater Noida are absorbing hyperscaler and colocation builds. As that capacity comes on, older in-house rooms are consolidated into colo halls, and estates move to satisfy the DPDP Act 2023, RBI data-localisation directions and MeitY guidance on where regulated data can sit. Most of these moves run against a downtime window, and that window is the real specification. Systems are live on a Friday, the floor has to be clear by Saturday, and services are needed back before the working week starts. Whether the racks roll whole or come apart unit by unit, whether the cutover happens in one outage or in phased waves, and how long the SAN can sit powered down — all of that is decided at the survey, written into a method statement, and crewed to the minute, because the restart is the only deadline that matters.

Full and partial 42U cabinets, open frames and enclosed racks. Rolled intact where the goods route, lift and floor loading allow, or de-racked device by device where weight or access forces it — each unit scanned against a rack-elevation drawing so it returns to the same slot map.
Blade chassis & compute
Blade enclosures, rack-mount servers and high-density compute. Blades and modules are drawn and logged where a chassis has to travel lighter, kept under anti-static handling, shock-protected on the road and re-seated to the recorded slot map at the destination.
SAN & storage arrays
Disk shelves, controllers, NAS and tape libraries. Arrays are quiesced and powered down to a clean state, drives and cabling indexed, and the array shock- and tilt-monitored in transit so the data on it arrives intact rather than as a restore from backup.
Network core & switching
Core and aggregation switches, routers, firewalls and the top-of-rack fabric. Every port is photographed and labelled before breakdown, patch records captured port to port, and the fabric rebuilt to that record so the network converges first time at the new floor.
UPS, PDU & battery banks
Online UPS modules, static switches, rack and floor PDUs, and VRLA or lithium battery strings. Banks are isolated and discharged to a safe transport state, their weight surveyed against floor loading, and the string reconnected and load-tested before IT load returns.
Structured cabling & CRAC
Structured copper, fibre trunks, overhead and underfloor cable management, plus CRAC and in-row cooling. Refrigerant is recovered by a certified engineer where cooling moves, fibre re-terminated and light-tested, and the cabling re-dressed to a documented layout.
Why a data centre move is different
Relocate a single machine and the job ends when it is levelled and the operator switches it on. A live data estate has no such single finish line — it is a system, and the order of operations is the whole job. An array shut down out of sequence can corrupt; a UPS pulled without isolating its battery string is a live hazard; a rack re-cabled from memory leaves ports crossed and a network that will not come up. Two questions sit at the front of every plan. The first is lift-and-shift against rip-and-replace — whether the existing kit moves as it stands, or whether ageing hardware is decommissioned and replaced as part of the migration. The second is full shutdown against phased waves — whether the business can take one clean outage, or whether services must be carried in waves while the racks travel.
Three disciplines make a data centre move what it is. Uptime governs everything: the cutover is sequenced and rehearsed at survey so the estate is back inside its window, not hoped back. Chain of custody runs in parallel — every server, array, switch and cabinet scanned to an asset register and signed for at each handover, so the document proves nothing was lost or swapped. And data security is its own thread: electronics are handled under ESD-controlled precautions, loaded cabinets ride on air-ride trailers under shock and tilt monitors, and retired drives are dealt with under certified erasure or media destruction rather than left to chance. None of these is optional, and all three are written into the plan before a single cable is pulled.
How a data centre migration is run
The work follows the same backbone as every industrial move we run, set out in full on our machinery moving methodology page, shaped here by the need to migrate a live system rather than re-site one asset.
Audit, asset tagging and reconciliation. Before anything is touched, the estate is audited against the rack-elevation drawings and each server, array, switch and cabinet is scanned to an asset register. That register is the spine of the move — it travels with the kit, is signed for at every handover, and is reconciled device by device at the destination, so the count that left the old floor is the count that lands on the new one.
Power-down and de-cable. A written sequence quiesces storage and applications in order, brings hosts down, then isolates UPS, PDUs and cooling so nothing carries a charge into transit. Each rack is de-cabled to a labelled patch record — structured copper and fibre logged port to port and photographed — so the re-cable at the far end is read off a document, not guessed.
Sealed, shock-monitored transit. Devices are handled under ESD-controlled, anti-static precautions and crated or strapped against vibration. Loaded cabinets travel sealed on climate-controlled, air-ride trucks fitted with shock and tilt loggers, so the SAN and the servers see no impact the data cannot survive. For inter-state legs — Navi Mumbai to Chennai, Pune to Hyderabad, NCR to Bengaluru — the GST e-way bill is raised against the asset list before the vehicle moves.
Certified erasure or media destruction. Where drives are decommissioned rather than carried, they are wiped to a recognised standard — NIST 800-88 secure-erase or a DoD-pattern overwrite — or physically destroyed where the data classification demands it, with a certificate issued per asset and reconciled against the register, co-ordinated with your team so the audit trail closes cleanly.
Re-rack, re-cable and power up. At the destination, devices return to the same slot map on the elevation drawing, cabinets are levelled and bonded, and the room is re-cabled to the patch record — fibre re-terminated and light-tested, copper links verified. Hot-aisle and cold-aisle containment is reinstated to the recorded rack pitch so airflow returns to design. UPS and battery strings are reconnected and load-tested, PDUs metered for phase balance, and the cooling re-established before racks draw their full load. Systems then come up in the agreed order and the estate is handed back with services restored inside the window.
The site survey, in detail
Nothing is quoted firm until an engineer has walked both the origin room and the destination, because a data centre is a system and the survey is longer than for a single asset. We record the access at each end — the goods route a truck can reach, the lift size and rating between levels, doorway and corridor clearances for rolling cabinets, and any colocation gate-pass or facility access rules to be cleared before racks enter the hall. We take floor loading at every rest point along the route: a loaded cabinet and a battery bank are heavy, and raised access floors have tile limits that a load survey respects with spreading where needed.
We then assess power and cooling readiness at the new floor — the supply available, the PDU and UPS capacity, the phase balance, and the CRAC or in-row cooling that must be live before the first rack draws power — and map the power-down sequence the existing room needs and the order systems come back in. Above all we agree the downtime window: how long services can be down, whether the migration runs as one cutover or in phased waves, and what must stay live throughout. The output is a written method statement with the power-down and re-rack sequence set out, the cutover crewed and costed, the inter-state e-way bill and any colo paperwork flagged, and the erasure or destruction scope confirmed. In-house room into a Chennai colo over weekend windows
A company retiring its in-house room in Navi Mumbai and migrating the estate into a colocation hall in Chennai, run across two consecutive weekend windows so the business stayed trading on weekdays. The coordinator held the programme against the windows: the survey caught a raised-floor tile limit at the origin that needed load-spreading under two battery cabinets, every rack was de-cabled to a labelled patch record, and the GST e-way bill was raised against the asset list for the inter-state leg. The SAN was quiesced to a clean state and shock-monitored on an air-ride truck, the Chennai gate-pass and access rules were cleared before the racks arrived, fibre was re-terminated and light-tested at the new hall, and each wave was online before its window closed.
Rack consolidation within a Bengaluru campus
A consolidation of two server rooms into a single larger suite within the same Bengaluru campus, where the racks never left the building but the slot map, cabling and containment all had to be rebuilt. The coordinator surveyed the goods route and lift between floors, ran an asset-tag chain of custody so every device was signed for at each handover, and rolled the cabinets whole where the corridor and floor allowed. The new suite was re-cabled to the patch record, the hot-aisle and cold-aisle containment reinstated to the recorded rack pitch, and the cooling proven before the racks drew their full load.
Hyderabad enterprise move with certified drive erasure
An enterprise relocating its data centre across Hyderabad and decommissioning a tranche of ageing storage as part of the move, with a data classification that required a documented erasure trail. The coordinator sequenced the power-down so each UPS module and its battery string was isolated and discharged to a safe transport state, co-ordinated NIST 800-88 secure-erase on the retired drives with a certificate issued per asset, and sent the few drives the classification required for physical destruction. The carried kit was re-racked to the elevation drawing, the asset register reconciled before sign-off, and the closed audit trail handed over with the room back online inside the window.

Frequently asked questions — data centre migration
Can the migration run in phased waves rather than one full shutdown?
Both are possible and the survey decides which fits. A full-shutdown cutover takes a clean outage window — usually a weekend — and is the simplest to plan when the business can stand the downtime. A phased migration carries services in waves so something stays up while the racks travel, which suits an estate that cannot go fully dark but needs more kit, a temporary feed and a longer programme. We size each wave against the rack count and the power and cooling that must be live, and crew whichever you choose.
How do you keep a chain of custody on every device?
Through an asset-tag register. Each server, array, switch and cabinet is scanned to the register before it leaves the floor and signed for at every handover — off the rack, onto the truck, off the truck, into the new rack. The register travels with the kit and is reconciled device by device at the destination before sign-off, which is the document that proves nothing was lost, swapped or left behind during the move.
Do you provide certified data erasure or media destruction?
