CNC Machine Moving

Across India's machine-tool belts — Bengaluru's aerospace and precision shops, the auto-component clusters around Pune, Chakan and Ranjangaon, the foundry and pump country of Coimbatore, the engineering yards of Rajkot and Ludhiana, and the press shops ringing Faridabad and Manesar — a CNC machine is the most demanding thing a relocation crew will be asked to lift. A machining centre, a turning centre, a wire or sinker EDM, a cylindrical grinder, a gear-hobbing machine: each is a calibrated instrument bolted to a casting, and the casting is the reference frame that holds tolerance. Move it like a crate and it arrives off level, off geometry and off the production schedule. Indian CNC work splits three ways, and each carries its own paperwork. An intra-city shift moves a machine across a shop floor or between units in the same industrial area — short on distance, long on floor-loading and clearance detail. An inter-state move, say a turning centre going from a Rajkot engineering unit to a buyer in Hosur, needs a GST e-way bill against the consignment value and, the moment the machine breaks the lorry envelope, treatment as over-dimensional cargo with RTO and state permits, a route survey and multi-axle hydraulic trailers. The export move — a used or rebuilt machine routed out through Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Pipavav, or cleared inland at an ICD such as Tughlakabad, Whitefield or Dadri — adds seaworthy crating and customs documentation on top. We plan for the route the machine is actually taking, not a generic one.

Machining centres

Vertical (VMC) and horizontal (HMC) machining centres, 3, 4 and 5-axis, commonly in the 8 to 25 tonne band but heavier in the big horizontals. Spindle locked or supported, every axis driven to a parked position and clamped, way covers and ballscrews shielded before a single foundation bolt is loosened.

Turning centres & lathes

CNC turning centres, mill-turn machines and Swiss-type sliding-head lathes. Turret, tailstock and steady rests secured, bar feeders, chip conveyors and coolant tanks detached and crated against the parent machine so the rebuild is exact.

Grinding machines

Cylindrical, surface and centreless grinders — the class that shows a poor floor first. Wheel heads locked, hydrostatic and LM-guide ways protected, and a patient re-levelling on the destination slab written into the programme at the survey rather than left to the day.

EDM machines

Wire EDM and sinker EDM. Dielectric tanks drained and capped, the wire path and electrode guides protected, and the granite or polymer-concrete base handled so the structure is never shock-loaded in transit or in the lift.

Gear-cutting machines

Gear hobbing machines, gear shapers and gear grinders. Heavy work-spindle and index assemblies supported, change wheels and indexing parts boxed and labelled, the machine kept level through the move so the cutting geometry is undisturbed.

Ancillaries & plant

Jig borers, CNC drilling machines, tool presetters, control cabinets, chillers, hydraulic power packs and coolant plant. These travel with the parent machine, are handled upright and shock-protected, and are reconnected and tested at destination as part of the same scope.

Why a CNC move is unlike any other relocation

Most industrial cargo is finished once it is on the floor at the other end. A CNC machine is barely half done at that point. The casting that carries the slideways is the machine's datum, and it cuts to tolerance only because an installation engineer levelled and aligned it when it was first commissioned. Sling it from the wrong points, jack it unevenly, or set it down on a slab with a high spot, and the bed takes a twist measured in microns — nothing you can see, and everything the first inspected part will tell you. So the governing idea on every CNC job is to preserve the geometry, not to recover it afterwards: lock the spindle, park and clamp the axes, lift only at the points the maker has marked, and never ask the casting to carry a load it was not designed for.

Levelling is the second half of the same problem. Precision machine tools, and grinders above all, sit on anti-vibration mounts that decouple them from the floor, and those mounts have to be re-set on the destination slab until the machine reads true across every axis on a precision spirit level or electronic inclinometer. A machine levelled to a few microns per metre in Coimbatore will not cut to that in Hosur until it is levelled again where it lands. Around that core sit the protections that decide whether a machine survives a long Indian haul over imperfect roads: way covers braced so vibration cannot concertina them, ballscrews and LM guides shielded from dust and knocks, control cabinets kept upright and shock-mounted, and the machine re-commissioned and geometrically re-qualified before it is signed back. None of it is decided on the day; it is set at the survey and run to a written method statement.

Methodology and equipment

A CNC relocation runs on the same engineering backbone as every heavy move we handle — set out in full on our machinery moving methodology page — tightened here by how little movement a calibrated machine will forgive.

Decommission. A controlled power-down, mains and pneumatics isolated, coolant and hydraulic systems drained, and on an EDM the dielectric tank emptied. The spindle is locked or supported, each axis is driven to a parked position and mechanically clamped, and way covers and ballscrews are protected before the holding-down bolts are touched. Where the machine is under OEM warranty, the manufacturer's engineer is built into the plan so power-down and recommissioning are both signed off and the warranty stands.

Protect and crate. Telescopic guards and way covers are braced against vibration, the control cabinet is secured upright, and tooling, chucks, steadies, tailstocks, index and change wheels are crated and labelled to their parent machine. For an export consignment the crating steps up to seaworthy standard — case-marked, fumigation-compliant timber, moisture barrier and desiccant, with lashing points engineered for the sea leg out of JNPT or Mundra.

Jack, skate and lift. Toe-jacks raise the machine at its marked points; Hilman roller skates and machine skates carry it along the surveyed route; air casters move it across epoxy and finished floors without point-loading them. Where weight or a doorway dictates, a hydra or mobile crane handles the lift on engineered slings and spreader bars sized to the casting. For an inter-state leg the machine is loaded to a low-bed or multi-axle hydraulic trailer, lashed and, where it runs as ODC, moved on the permitted route with escort where the RTO requires it. Lift and lashing plans are signed before the day.

Set, level and align. At destination the machine is set to its marked footprint on its mounts, then levelled across every axis until it reads true, the mounts adjusted in sequence so the bed carries no twist. Grinders and turning centres are re-levelled with the most patience because they betray a poor slab first, and on a green or freshly repaired floor we hold the geometry check until the concrete has cured.

Re-commission and re-qualify. Services are reconnected, the control is powered up, axes are homed and the machine is run through its reference moves. Where the contract calls for it, geometry is re-qualified with a ballbar test for circularity and squareness and a laser interferometer for axis positioning and straightness, the results read against the machine's own baseline before it goes back into production cutting to tolerance.

The site survey, in detail

Nothing is quoted firm until an engineer has walked both origin and destination. For a CNC machine the survey is as much about the floor and the route as the machine. We record the weight and the maker's lifting points, how the machine is bolted and shimmed down, and whether it stands on anti-vibration mounts that must be re-set at the far end. Along the route we check floor loading at each rest point, doorway and corridor clearances for the skating gear, overhead obstructions, and whether a crane lift or a wall opening is needed to extract a 20-tonne machining centre from a packed shop. For an inter-state move we measure the load against the lorry envelope to settle whether it travels normal or as ODC, and we flag the GST e-way bill, the RTO and state permits and the route survey early, because those clear on their own timeline and a fixed date depends on them. For an export consignment we confirm the port or ICD routing, the HS classification — machine tools sit under Chapter 84 of the tariff, their electrical control gear under Chapter 85 — and the crating standard the shipping line will accept. The output is a written method statement with the lift plan, the protection schedule, the permit list and costed options. Single machine

5-axis VMC re-sited inside a Chakan auto-component plant

A component supplier near Chakan re-siting a 16-tonne 5-axis machining centre to a new cell at the far end of the same plant to make room for an added line. The coordinator walked the route at survey and found a floor-loading point over a buried service duct that needed spreader plates before the skates could cross it. The spindle was locked and the axes clamped before breakdown, the machine moved on Hilman skates and air casters to spare the finished floor, and re-levelled on its mounts at the new footprint. A ballbar test at handover confirmed circularity against the machine's baseline before it returned to cutting.

Shop relocation

Multi-machine CNC shop moved Bengaluru to Hosur

A toolroom relocating nine machines — turning centres, two VMCs, a wire EDM and two grinders — from a Bengaluru unit to a larger plant at Hosur, an inter-state leg across the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border. The coordinator sequenced the move so the shop kept partial output through a staged shutdown, raised the GST e-way bills against each consignment, arranged the RTO permits for the two trailers that ran as ODC, and brought the OEM engineer in for the EDM power-down. Tooling and change-parts were crated to each parent machine; every machine was levelled at the destination, and the two grinders were re-qualified last so their slab had fully cured.

Cylindrical grinder shifted across Coimbatore

A pump-component maker moving one cylindrical grinder to a new workshop within Coimbatore, where the slab was the entire question because a grinder shows floor error before anything else. The coordinator confirmed the destination floor was flat and sound at survey, had the wheel head locked and the LM-guide ways protected for the road, and planned a patient re-levelling on the anti-vibration mounts at the new site. The machine was checked with a precision inclinometer until it read true across both axes, then run through its reference cycle before handover.

Frequently asked questions — CNC machine relocation

How do you keep the machine's calibration through the move?

By protecting the geometry rather than leaning on a re-calibration to rescue it later. The spindle is locked or supported, every axis is parked and mechanically clamped, and the machine is lifted only at the maker's marked points so the casting carries no load it was not built for. Way covers, ballscrews and LM guides are shielded from grit and knocks, and at destination the machine is set on a flat slab and re-levelled before anything else. Handled that way, most machines hold their calibration and need only a geometry check to confirm it.

Can you move a 30-tonne CNC machine?

Yes. We move everything from a few-tonne lathe to large horizontal machining and gear-cutting machines well above 30 tonnes. In the heavier bands the survey is what counts: floor loading along the route, the lifting points and slinging arrangement, the crane size and spreader bars for the lift, and whether a wall or roof opening is needed to get the machine out of the shop. For an inter-state leg the machine usually runs as over-dimensional cargo on a multi-axle hydraulic trailer, with the RTO route and permits arranged in advance. The lift and lashing plans are engineered and signed before the day.

Do you level the machine at the destination?

Yes — levelling at destination is part of the scope, not an extra. The machine is set on its anti-vibration mounts to the marked footprint, then levelled across every axis with a precision spirit level or electronic inclinometer, the mounts adjusted in sequence until the bed reads true and carries no twist. Grinders and turning centres are levelled with the most care because they reveal floor error first. The machine is not signed back to the operator until it reads level.

How are tooling, chucks and index wheels handled?

Tooling, chucks, steadies, tailstocks, bar feeders, index and change wheels and any other detachable assemblies are removed where it is safer to move them separately, then crated and labelled to their parent machine. Indexing each crate to the machine it came off is what prevents a mismatch or a lost change-part at the rebuild — the same discipline that lets the machine go back together exactly as it came apart.

What does re-commissioning and geometric re-qualification involve?

Re-commissioning is reconnecting services, powering up the control, homing the axes and running the machine through its reference moves to confirm it behaves as it did before. Geometric re-qualification, where the contract asks for it, adds a ballbar test for circularity and squareness and a laser interferometer check for axis positioning and straightness. The figures are compared against the machine's own baseline, so you hold a record that it cuts to tolerance before it goes back into production.

Will the machine need re-calibration after the move?

Often not, where the geometry was protected and the machine was levelled correctly at destination — a ballbar and laser check usually confirms it is still within tolerance. Where a machine was already drifting before the move, or where an OEM service contract requires a fresh calibration on relocation, we co-ordinate the manufacturer's engineer to do it at handover. The survey is where we agree which of those applies to your machine, so there are no surprises on cost.

What inter-state permits and e-way documentation are needed?

An inter-state machine move needs a GST e-way bill raised against the consignment value before the lorry rolls. Where the load breaks the standard road envelope it is treated as over-dimensional cargo, which brings in RTO and state transport permits, a route survey for height and bridge clearances, multi-axle hydraulic trailers and, on some routes, a police escort. We handle the e-way bill, the permits and the route survey as part of the move, and we flag them at the survey stage because they clear on their own timeline and a fixed lift date depends on them being in hand.

How quickly can you survey a CNC machine?
