Uganda has one of the longest-established Indian communities in East Africa, and the India–Uganda relationship today spans trade, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare and education. Indian-owned businesses are a visible part of Kampala’s commercial life, and the corridor carries a steady flow of families joining relatives, professionals taking up postings, and companies expanding into the East African market. For each of them, the move from India is the practical step that turns a plan into a relocation.
Seemleius handles the India–Uganda corridor as a single managed process. Uganda is landlocked, so every shipment is planned around the Northern Corridor — the road and rail route inland from the Kenyan coast at Mombasa — and the timeline and documentation reflect that two-stage journey. We are clear from the start about how the sea leg and the overland leg fit together, so there are no surprises when the container clears the port and begins its road journey to Kampala.
Freight routes and customs
The move starts in India. Export clearance runs through ICEGATE, with the shipping bill filed under the Customs Act and AD code registration completed at the originating port. Sea freight departs Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and sails to Mombasa in Kenya, the principal gateway for landlocked Uganda, with port-to-port transit typically around 14 to 22 days. From Mombasa the shipment moves inland on the Northern Corridor by road or rail to Kampala, adding several days. Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) routes into Entebbe International Airport (EBB) and suits time-critical, lower-volume moves.
At the destination, customs is administered by the Uganda Revenue Authority. Uganda allows relief from import duty and taxes on used personal and household effects for people changing residence, where the goods are owned and used prior to the move and supported by a clear inventory, passport and proof of relocation. Because the goods transit Kenya first, transit documentation must be accurate to keep the shipment moving smoothly along the corridor.

Who moves on this corridor
The India–Uganda corridor serves a broad spread of moves. Household relocations include families joining the established Indian community, professionals on healthcare, education and engineering postings, and returning Ugandans of Indian origin. Business and office moves cover companies setting up trading, manufacturing and service operations in Kampala. Commercial freight runs from machinery and processing equipment to retail stock and project materials for the agriculture and construction sectors. This single page covers the whole corridor.
