Sri Lanka is one of India’s closest and busiest relocation corridors. The two countries share deep cultural, commercial and family ties, and the short sea distance — Colombo is one of the nearest major ports to India’s western and southern coasts — makes this a high-volume, fast-moving route. Indian professionals, business owners, IT and engineering staff, and families with cross-border connections move on this corridor constantly, supported by a free trade agreement and one of South Asia’s most integrated economic relationships.

Because India and Sri Lanka are so close, the India–Sri Lanka move is quicker and simpler than almost any other corridor we operate. Transit times are short, sailings are frequent, and Colombo itself is among the largest transhipment ports in the Indian Ocean, with regular feeder calls in and out of Indian east-coast ports. The work that makes it smooth is precise documentation and proper packing at the India end — with those in order, this move is genuinely fast.

The India–Sri Lanka corridor

Sea freight is the backbone for household and commercial volumes. Containers depart Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin with the shipping bill filed on ICEGATE and the AD code registered at the originating port. The destination is the Port of Colombo, one of the busiest ports in South Asia, with Hambantota and Trincomalee serving the south and east. Because of the short distance, port-to-port transit is brief — typically 4 to 10 days, with Chennai and Cochin offering especially quick connections to Colombo.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) routes to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo, with frequent direct services and a flying time of around one to three hours. Air suits urgent or smaller shipments and is unusually affordable on this short corridor. Import clearance is handled by Sri Lanka Customs; returning nationals and qualifying new residents may claim relief on used personal and household effects owned and used before the move, supported by the customs declaration and evidence of relocation.

Indian export clearance

Shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration and FEMA-aware documentation, with customs clearance managed at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin.

Short, fast routing

Sea via Colombo on frequent services with short transit times (4 to 10 days), and quick, affordable air via CMB when speed matters.

Sri Lankan customs

Import declarations to Sri Lanka Customs, used-effects relief assessed for qualifying returning and new residents, and duty exposure confirmed before your shipment sails.

One coordinator, both ends

The same coordinator manages your India survey, export paperwork, dispatch and Sri Lankan delivery — no handover gaps between origin and destination.

Who moves on this corridor

This single corridor serves the whole range of moves. Households and families relocating to Colombo or Kandy for work, study or family reasons; professionals and business owners in IT, engineering, hospitality and trade; and business and commercial freight — office relocations, equipment and trade consignments for Indian companies, which move frequently given the close trade relationship. The route and clearance steps are the same whether you are shipping a household or a commercial container.

Where we deliver in Sri Lanka

How your move works

  1. India-side survey. We assess volume and contents at your home or office — in person in major cities or by video — and return a clear quote with sea and air options and realistic Colombo arrival windows.
  2. Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared promptly: shipping bill on ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations.
  3. Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard and the shipment is booked via Colombo, or flown from BOM, DEL, BLR or MAA into CMB.
  4. Clear and deliver in Sri Lanka. We manage Sri Lanka Customs clearance, advise on used-effects relief, and coordinate onward delivery to your address.
