Moving to Latvia

The India–Latvia move starts with the India end: export customs clearance through ICEGATE at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai Port or Cochin, preparation of the shipping bill under the Customs Act, AD code registration with the originating port, and the careful packing of a household or office that will travel several thousand nautical miles into the Baltic Sea before it arrives. That preparation is as important as anything that happens at the Latvian end — and it is where most coordination gaps occur when the India side is handled carelessly. Once the container reaches the Port of Riga or Ventspils, the Latvian side begins: customs clearance with the State Revenue Service (Valsts ieņēmumu dienests), the EU transfer-of-residence relief that removes duty and VAT on used personal effects owned for at least twelve months, and the residence formalities — the personal code (personas kods), the declaration of place of residence, and the residence permit issued by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

The India–Latvia corridor

Sea freight is the backbone of this corridor for household and commercial volumes. Container vessels from Nhava Sheva and Mundra reach the Baltic ports of Riga and Ventspils, almost always via a transhipment hub in Northern Europe — Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam or Gdansk — before the feeder leg into the Gulf of Riga. Realistic port-to-port transit times run from roughly 30 to 42 days depending on routing, the transhipment connection and the feeder schedule into the Baltic. Chennai Port and Cochin provide alternative gateways for origin cities in South India. From the Port of Riga, onward road delivery reaches every address in Latvia — Riga itself, Daugavpils in the east, Liepāja on the coast, Jelgava and the smaller towns — on a road network that is compact by Western European standards.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) serves moves where the timeline cannot accommodate sea transit. There is no direct India–Riga passenger or freighter service, so air shipments route through a European hub — commonly Frankfurt, Helsinki or Istanbul — before the connecting leg into Riga (RIX), the principal air hub of the Baltic states. 2. Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations relevant to your move. We do not leave this to the last week.
