Moving to Nepal

The India–Nepal corridor is one of the busiest relocation routes in South Asia, and unlike almost every other move from India it is overwhelmingly an overland one. With an open border, deep family and business ties, and the Indian rupee accepted across much of the country, Nepal sits closer to India logistically than any sea destination — yet a household or office move still demands proper documentation, packing and customs handling to cross cleanly at Birgunj, Bhairahawa or Kakarbhitta.

Trucks dispatched from Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Kolkata and other northern origin cities run to the Nepal frontier, clear customs at the integrated check posts, and continue to Kathmandu or wherever your destination lies. Because so much of the route is on the ground, timelines are short — but the paperwork at the border is where careless moves stall, and that is where our coordination matters most.

Freight routes and customs

The India end still requires correct export handling. For overland shipments a shipping bill is filed through ICEGATE, the AD code is registered, and a packing list and invoice are prepared so the consignment crosses without dispute. The principal land routes run via the Raxaul–Birgunj crossing (the highest-volume gateway, feeding Kathmandu and the Terai), Sunauli–Bhairahawa for the west, and Panitanki–Kakarbhitta for the east. Road transit from northern Indian cities to Kathmandu is typically 3 to 7 days.

For time-sensitive or high-value shipments, air freight runs from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu, with flying times of around 2 to 3 hours on direct services. Nepal’s Department of Customs administers import clearance; used household effects accompanying a genuine relocation are assessed under personal-effects and transfer-of-residence provisions, and we confirm the duty and documentation position before anything is dispatched.

Who moves on this corridor

The India–Nepal route carries a wide mix. Household movers include families relocating for work, returning Nepali nationals and Indian professionals posted to Kathmandu. Business and office relocations are common given the dense commercial links — Indian firms have a long-standing presence in Nepal’s banking, manufacturing, hospitality and infrastructure sectors. Commercial freight covers project cargo, machinery and trade goods moving north under the bilateral trade and transit framework.

Mountainous terrain and seasonal road conditions affect the final leg to some hill destinations, and we plan delivery windows accordingly. 1. India-side survey. We assess volume and contents at your home or office in India — in person in major cities, or by video — and return a clear quote with road and air options explained, including realistic Kathmandu arrival windows.
2. Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations relevant to your move.
3. Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard from your India origin, and the consignment is booked and dispatched on the confirmed road or air route to Nepal.
4. Clear and deliver in Nepal. We manage customs at the integrated check post or Tribhuvan airport, confirm personal-effects relief, and coordinate onward delivery to your address.
