Iraq’s reconstruction and its oil and gas sector have drawn Indian professionals and firms back to the country in significant numbers. Engineering, energy services, construction and project management are the main draws, and the India–Iraq relationship — built heavily on energy — is one of India’s largest. Relocating along this corridor calls for conservative planning: the route is long, customs procedures are exacting, and operational conditions vary by region. Seemleius manages the India–Iraq move from start to finish and is candid about what the corridor can and cannot guarantee.

The move begins in India. Export clearance is filed through ICEGATE with the shipping bill prepared under the Customs Act, AD code registration completed at the loading port, and packing built for a long voyage and demanding handling. In Iraq, imports are cleared by the General Commission of Customs through the southern port of Umm Qasr, the country’s principal maritime gateway near Basra. Returning Iraqi nationals and long-term residents may be eligible for relief on used household effects, and we confirm the documentary position — residence permit, work authorisation, ownership evidence — well before a shipment is committed.

Freight routes and customs

Sea freight is the principal mode for household and commercial volumes. Containers depart Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and route to Umm Qasr in the Gulf, near Basra. Most services route through a Gulf transhipment hub such as Jebel Ali before the final leg; realistic port-to-port transit runs about 18 to 30 days, and we plan for the wider end given the possibility of port congestion and detailed customs inspection. Origin documentation must be precise, because Iraqi clearance is thorough.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) reaches Baghdad International Airport (BGW), Basra International Airport (BSR) or Erbil International Airport (EBL) on direct and one-stop routings, frequently via a Gulf hub. Air suits urgent, compact consignments while the main shipment travels by sea. We explain the cost gap plainly and help you decide what genuinely needs to fly.

Indian export clearance

Shipping bill on ICEGATE, AD code registration and Indian customs clearance managed at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin for a correctly documented departure.

Iraq customs

Clearance through the General Commission of Customs at Umm Qasr, with relief on used household effects for returning residents assessed in advance.

Sea and air options

Sea via Umm Qasr on Gulf transhipment routings (about 18 to 30 days); air via Baghdad, Basra or Erbil for urgent consignments.

Conservative, informed planning

One coordinator manages every stage, plans for thorough customs inspection, and keeps you updated honestly across a demanding corridor.

Who moves on this corridor

The India–Iraq route serves a defined group. Household moves are largely oil and gas, engineering, construction and project staff and their families on contract, including in the Kurdistan Region. Business and office relocations cover Indian firms in energy services, construction, trading and equipment supply. Commercial freight is substantial — project cargo, plant, spares and fit-out materials. We scope each move individually.

Where we deliver in Iraq

We deliver to Baghdad, the capital and main commercial centre; Basra in the south, near the oil fields and Umm Qasr; and Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Duhok in the Kurdistan Region, which has its own administration. We also coordinate delivery to Najaf, Karbala, Mosul and Kirkuk where conditions allow. Inland delivery is planned conservatively around route condition and prevailing security advice. If your destination is not listed, ask us and we will assess the final leg honestly.

How your move works

  1. India-side survey. We assess volume at your home or office in India, in person or by video, and return a clear quote with sea and air options and a realistic, conservative Iraq arrival window.
  2. Export documentation. Indian paperwork is prepared early — shipping bill on ICEGATE, AD code, packing list and invoice — so nothing is left to the final week.
  3. Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard and the shipment is booked on the confirmed routing to Umm Qasr or by air to Baghdad, Basra or Erbil.
  4. Clear and deliver in Iraq. We manage customs clearance with the General Commission of Customs, advise on relief for used effects, and coordinate onward delivery to your address.

For a move from India to Iraq, request a quote and your coordinator will give you a frank assessment and a clear starting point.
