Families moving from India to Hungary often raise two questions that sit outside the household shipment: what happens to the dog or cat, and is it worth bringing the car. The answer to both is yes, with specific conditions attached. Both need planning that begins at the India end, and both become considerably harder when they are left until the final weeks before departure. The pet timeline alone — governed by the EU’s rabies titre wait for animals arriving from non-listed third countries — can stretch to six months or more, while the vehicle path requires EU transfer-of-residence relief, a Hungarian technical inspection and a registration step at the local authority before the car can lawfully use Hungarian roads. Relocating your pet from India to Hungary

Hungary applies the EU pet entry rules under Regulation (EU) 576/2013. For an animal travelling from India — a non-EU, non-listed third country for rabies purposes — the requirements are detailed and the order is fixed. The animal must first be implanted with an ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip. The rabies vaccination must come after the microchip, because any vaccination given before the chip is not valid for EU entry. A rabies antibody titre test — the FAVN (Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralisation) test — must then be carried out at an EU-approved laboratory at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination, and it must show an antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/ml. A three-month waiting period must then elapse, counted from the date the blood sample for that titre test was drawn, before the animal is allowed to enter the EU.

Once those steps are complete, an EU Animal Health Certificate must be issued by an official Indian veterinary authority within ten days of travel. The certificate is pre-notified to the EU through TRACES NT, the EU’s electronic certification platform, and the animal must enter the EU at a designated Travellers’ Point of Entry. Because Hungary is landlocked and most India-origin pets travel by air, that point of entry is commonly Budapest (BUD), or another EU airport if the routing requires a connection. None of these steps can be reordered or compressed — the sequence is the timeline.

India adds its own export requirements in parallel. The Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (AQCS) issues the Indian export health certificate, and a No Objection Certificate from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau is required for certain species and for any CITES-listed animal. The pet must be examined by an authorised veterinary officer and its microchip details verified before the Indian certificate is issued. Shipping a vehicle from India to Hungary

Bringing a car or motorcycle from India to Hungary involves Indian export documentation — the RC book, a No Objection Certificate from the RTO, the AD code and an ICEGATE shipping bill covering the vehicle — sea freight from Nhava Sheva or Mundra to a European gateway, an overland leg into Hungary, and then a Hungarian registration process. Because Hungary has no seaport, the vehicle is shipped to a northern European port such as Bremerhaven or Hamburg, or to an Adriatic port such as Koper or Rijeka, and moved overland from there. For a vehicle built to non-EU specification, the central step on arrival is a Hungarian technical inspection (műszaki vizsga) that assesses whether the vehicle meets EU and Hungarian roadworthiness and type-approval standards — covering lighting, emissions, brakes, glazing and structural items. On the customs side, EU transfer-of-residence relief is the principal route to avoid the EU import duty and the import VAT that would otherwise apply to a non-EU vehicle.
