Moving to Guyana

The move starts in India. Export clearance is filed through ICEGATE with the shipping bill prepared under the Customs Act, AD code registration completed at the loading port, and packing built for a long Atlantic-crossing voyage. In Guyana, imports are cleared by the Guyana Revenue Authority’s Customs and Trade Administration through Georgetown’s port facilities. Returning Guyanese and long-term residents may claim relief on used household and personal effects under the country’s concessions for returning residents, and we confirm eligibility — passport history, residence evidence, proof of prior ownership — before a shipment sails.

Freight routes and customs

Sea freight is the backbone of this corridor. Containers depart Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and route to Georgetown, Guyana’s principal port on the Demerara River. There are no direct sailings from India, so cargo routes through a Caribbean transhipment hub — commonly Kingston, Caucedo or a US east-coast port — before the final leg; realistic port-to-port transit runs about 35 to 50 days. Georgetown’s river port has draft limits, so vessel and routing choice matters, and origin documentation must be accurate.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) reaches Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) near Georgetown on multi-stop routings, typically via a Gulf hub and a North American or Caribbean connection.
