India-side: your departure city determines the gateway

Sea freight from Mumbai and Pune routes through Nhava Sheva (JNPT) — India’s largest container port and the natural gateway for western India. Gujarat-based moves go through Mundra. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh moves, and those from Bengaluru and Hyderabad, often route through Chennai Port. Kerala families, whose emigration to the US is substantial and long-standing, depart through Cochin.

Air freight for urgent items or smaller moves goes from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR), Chennai (MAA) or Hyderabad (HYD) direct to the US, with connections into Heathrow or other hubs depending on the routing.

The Indian export documentation we prepare

Many families are surprised that exporting personal effects from India requires customs attention. A shipping bill must be filed with Indian customs. The inventory must be prepared to the standard the Indian customs officer will review at the port. In some cases — particularly for families moving on a work visa — the officer wants to see the visa documentation and the shipper’s passport to confirm the nature of the export. We prepare all of this as part of the move; the documentation is ready before a single carton is sealed.

US CBP documentation: what must be right

US Customs & Border Protection handles household imports with Form 3299 (Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles). The form is straightforward in theory — it declares that the goods are genuine personal and household effects and not commercial goods. In practice, the accompanying inventory must be detailed, the prohibited-items list must be reviewed against every item in the shipment, and the valuation must be honest and defensible. Items that appear commercial (multiple units of the same product, for example) attract scrutiny. We walk through the prohibited list with you and prepare the full CBP submission before departure.
