Pets & Vehicle Relocation to the United Kingdom
Relocating pets and vehicles from India to the United Kingdom — UK entry requirements, Indian export paperwork and coordinated freight, managed as part of your move.
Moving a pet or a vehicle from India to the UK is a category of its own. Both require preparation that begins weeks or months before the departure date, both involve bureaucratic processes in two countries, and both carry real consequences if the requirements are not met. A pet refused at the UK border or a vehicle held pending compliance assessment is a distressing and expensive outcome. Seemleius coordinates pet and vehicle relocation from India to the UK as a structured part of your move, with the Indian documentation side — export customs, RTO deregistration, NABL-accredited veterinary testing — handled as carefully as the UK entry requirements set by Defra, APHA and DVLA.
Bringing your pet from India to the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom has specific and strictly enforced biosecurity requirements for animals entering the country, administered by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) on behalf of Defra. Post-Brexit, the UK does not accept the EU Pet Passport from third countries; pets travelling from India enter under the Great Britain pet travel rules using an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an Indian official veterinarian and endorsed for travel to GB. For cats and dogs the core sequence is non-negotiable: a microchip implanted first, then a rabies vaccination given after the microchip is in place, and at least 21 days between the primary rabies dose and travel. A rabies titer test (RNATT) from a NABL-accredited laboratory is not a UK legal requirement from India, but we routinely recommend it — it documents protective antibody levels and pre-empts any question at the border or with downstream EU travel.
For dogs there is one further step: a tapeworm (echinococcus) treatment administered by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before scheduled arrival in GB, with the treatment recorded on the AHC. The most common ways pets travel out of India are as manifested cargo or excess baggage on the major carriers from BOM and DEL to LHR — British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa via FRA, KLM via AMS and the Gulf carriers via DXB or DOH all carry pets to the UK on different terms. Direct routings minimise transit stress; we book the pet-friendly carrier and routing that suits the species and the time of year.
- Microchip-first then rabies vaccination, with the 21-day post-vaccination wait built into the timeline
- Animal Health Certificate prepared by an Indian official veterinarian, endorsed for GB entry
- Optional but recommended RNATT (rabies antibody titer) from a NABL-accredited laboratory
- Tapeworm treatment for dogs, recorded 24 to 120 hours before GB arrival
- Booking with pet-friendly carriers ex BOM or DEL to LHR, in IATA-compliant kennel
- Alignment of the pet’s travel with your own departure from India and APHA arrival inspection at LHR
Shipping your vehicle from India to the UK
Exporting a vehicle from India is a multi-step process. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the state of registration deregisters the vehicle and issues a No Objection Certificate (NOC); the export Shipping Bill is filed on ICEGATE with the chassis and engine numbers; and the vehicle is loaded for sea freight either in a container or on a roll-on / roll-off (ro-ro) sailing depending on volumes and your insurance preference. These Indian export requirements are in addition to the UK’s own import rules.
On the UK side, an import duty position has to be cleared at CDS, then DVLA registration begins. The first step after clearance is a NOVA (Notification of Vehicle Arrival) submission to HMRC within fourteen days — without a NOVA reference, the DVLA will not register the vehicle. The registration application itself runs on a V55/4 form for a brand-new vehicle or a V55/5 for a used one, supported by the original Indian registration certificate, proof of import duty paid, and either a Mutual Recognition certificate (where the vehicle was type-approved in a recognised regime) or an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) certificate where the model was not approved to UK / EU standards. Most Indian-market vehicles are built to Indian Bharat Stage emission and AIS standards rather than to UK or EU type approval, which usually puts them through the IVA route — an inspection-based approval that confirms the specific vehicle meets UK construction and use requirements.
There is one significant exception: vehicles over thirty years old can usually enter under the UK Historic Vehicle regime, which simplifies the registration path and brings a different (often nil) duty and VAT position. Classic cars from India — pre-1996 Ambassadors, Padmini Premiers, Contessa, older Royal Enfield motorcycles — routinely move under this route. We assess the position honestly before you commit to shipping, so the decision is made with full information.
- Indian export process: RTO deregistration, NOC, ICEGATE Shipping Bill, ro-ro or containerised sea freight
- UK NOVA filed within fourteen days of arrival to start the HMRC clock
- DVLA V55/4 or V55/5 registration with IVA inspection or Mutual Recognition certificate
- 30-year Historic Vehicle route for eligible classics — simpler registration, distinct duty treatment
- Pre-shipment condition report documenting the vehicle’s state before it leaves India
- Import duty and UK VAT assessment under CDS at the port of entry
Planning both together
- Tell us what is moving. Pet (species, age, microchip and vaccination status) and / or vehicle (make, model, year, RTO state of registration, type-approval history) — plus your planned UK arrival date.
- Map the requirements and timeline. We work through the Defra / APHA entry requirements for the pet and the DVLA / IVA / Historic Vehicle position for the car, and build the preparation timeline, identifying anything that needs to start immediately (microchip, rabies vaccination, RTO file opening).
- Coordinate the Indian paperwork. NABL-accredited veterinary work, AHC preparation, RTO deregistration and the export Shipping Bill on ICEGATE are managed at the India end.
- Arrange travel and freight. Pet travel ex BOM or DEL to LHR is booked on a suitable carrier; vehicle shipment is dispatched through the appropriate Indian gateway; UK NOVA and CDS clearance are filed on arrival.
Pet preparation for the UK from India is particularly time-sensitive — the microchip-then-rabies sequence and the 21-day wait set a floor on the schedule before any travel booking can be confirmed. Get in touch as early as possible and we will tell you exactly what you are working with.
Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to the United Kingdom take?
Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
