Employee Relocation to the United Kingdom
Employee relocation from India to the United Kingdom, built for HR and global mobility teams — visa-aware, export-compliant, with one coordinator managing each person’s move.
The India–UK visa corridor is one of the most active in the world. Healthcare professionals on the Health and Care Worker visa joining NHS trusts, technology workers arriving on the Skilled Worker visa, intracompany transferees (Senior or Specialist Worker route), researchers and creatives on Global Talent, and founders on Innovator Founder all need their households moved. Behind each of those people is an HR or global-mobility team managing the relocation entitlement — and behind that entitlement is a moving process that involves an Indian export through ICEGATE, weeks of ocean freight, and UK import clearance under HMRC’s Transfer of Residence (ToR1) relief. Seemleius employee relocation on this corridor is structured to absorb all of that complexity, so your programme runs without HR carrying the operational load.
What makes India-origin employee moves distinctive
An employee relocating from London to Manchester is a logistics problem. An employee relocating from Bengaluru or Kochi to a UK NHS trust or a London technology firm is a logistics problem with an Indian export customs layer, an HMRC ToR1 application and a visa-dependent start date on top. The Shipping Bill needs to be filed on ICEGATE under the forwarder’s AD code; FEMA implications need to be cleared where they arise; the employee’s ToR1 application has to be submitted to HMRC before the goods arrive at the UK port; the inventory needs to be prepared to a standard that the UK Customs Declaration Service (CDS) will accept on arrival. None of this is intractable — but it is additional, and it is the part that ad-hoc management consistently gets wrong.
Your policy is aligned with us once. After that, every India–UK move — whether the employee is moving from Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi or Bengaluru — runs to the same process. The employee deals with one coordinator who handles the ICEGATE export as naturally as the ToR1 application.
Visa routes we work with
The dominant Indian-passport routes into the UK at the moment, in roughly the order we see them on this corridor:
- Skilled Worker visa — RQF level 3 (A-level equivalent) and above, sponsored by a UK employer holding a sponsor licence; the workhorse route for IT services, engineering, finance and many shortage-occupation roles
- Health and Care Worker visa — a discounted variant of the Skilled Worker route for NHS trusts, social care employers and equivalent; the route nurses, doctors and senior carers from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh travel on in very large numbers
- Senior or Specialist Worker (formerly ICT) — for intracompany transfers from the Indian parent to the UK subsidiary; common across the major IT services firms
- Global Talent — for researchers, academics, digital technology specialists and creatives endorsed by a recognised UK body
- Innovator Founder — for founders launching an endorsed scalable business in the UK
Each route has its own start-date logic, dependant rules and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) implications. We do not give immigration advice, but we do schedule the move around the visa, not the other way around.
UK arrival admin we plan around
On arrival in the UK the employee normally needs to apply for a National Insurance number (often online before travel), register with an NHS GP using their visa and proof of UK address, set up a UK bank account, and confirm their tax position with HMRC. For families, state-school admission runs on local-authority catchment with limited mid-year flexibility, and independent schools run a 12 to 18 month admissions cycle. We sequence the household delivery so the employee has the furniture and essentials in place before the family arrives or shortly after — not three weeks later when the first paycheque has cleared but the bed is still in a container at Felixstowe.
What the programme covers
Visa-aware scheduling
Shipment dates built around the employee’s visa start and UK arrival date — not a standard moving calendar that ignores immigration timing.
ICEGATE export managed
Shipping Bill, AD code, FEMA position and any GST LUT considerations handled at the India end for each employee’s move.
ToR1 application prepared
HMRC Transfer of Residence relief applied for and approved before the goods arrive at the UK port — duty-free clearance secured.
One coordinator per employee
A single point of contact who knows the India–UK corridor and the individual employee’s move — so HR is not the intermediary.
Origin cities in scope
We run employee relocations from across India’s professional centres. The NHS pipeline draws heavily from Kerala (Kochi and the wider state), Tamil Nadu (Chennai) and Andhra Pradesh; the technology corridor adds Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune; financial and headquarter functions bring Mumbai and Delhi NCR into the mix. Wherever the employee is based in India — including tier-two cities — we cover the move from their home address through the appropriate port or airport gateway to their UK destination.
How the programme works
- Policy alignment. We map your relocation policy — entitlements, volume caps, freight options, ToR1 handling — so every India–UK move runs to the same rules without further calibration.
- Employee initiation. HR refers the employee with their visa type and start date; we contact them directly, survey their home in India and return a policy-checked quote.
- Export and ship. The Shipping Bill is filed on ICEGATE, the ToR1 application is submitted to HMRC, the home is packed, and the shipment is dispatched through the appropriate Indian gateway.
- UK delivery and close. CDS clearance is managed with ToR1 relief; the employee receives delivery at their UK address; HR receives milestone confirmation and final documentation.
Whether you relocate five people a year from India to the UK or run a continuous NHS or technology-sector programme, the structure is the same. Talk to us about your policy and the corridor will run cleanly.
Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to the United Kingdom take?
Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
