Lithuania has become a quietly compelling destination for Indian professionals, founders and families. The country anchors the European Union’s north-eastern edge, runs one of the fastest-growing fintech and laser-photonics sectors in the EU, and hosts a deep base of shared service and global business centres in Vilnius and Kaunas that recruit actively from India. Lithuania was also the first country to issue a dedicated Startup Visa, and Indian engineers, IT specialists and life-sciences researchers now form a visible part of the talent pipeline that staffs Vilnius’s technology campuses. For the individuals and families making that move, the relocation of a household or an office is the physical counterpart to a decision that has usually been carefully weighed. Seemleius exists to make the logistics as considered as the choice.

The India–Lithuania move begins at the India end: export customs clearance through ICEGATE at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai Port or Cochin, preparation of the shipping bill under the Customs Act, AD code registration with the originating port and the disciplined packing of a home or office that will travel a long sea route before it reaches the Baltic. That preparation matters as much as anything that happens on the Lithuanian side — and it is where coordination gaps appear when the India end is treated as an afterthought. Once a container reaches the Port of Klaipéda — Lithuania’s only seaport and one of the Baltic’s major ice-free gateways — the Lithuanian side begins: import processing with the Lithuanian Customs (Muitiné), the EU’s Common Customs Tariff and import VAT question, and the EU transfer-of-residence relief that, when correctly claimed, removes duty and VAT on used personal effects owned for at least twelve months.

The India–Lithuania corridor

Sea freight is the backbone of this corridor for household and commercial volumes. Container vessels from Nhava Sheva and Mundra reach the Port of Klaipéda either on services routed through the major North European hub ports — with feeder connections onward into the Baltic — or via direct Baltic strings, with transit times typically in the range of 28 to 40 days port to port depending on routing, transhipment and intermediate calls. Chennai Port and Cochin provide practical gateways for origin cities in South India. From Klaipéda, onward road delivery reaches Vilnius, Kaunas, Šiauliai and every address in the country on a compact national road network where no Lithuanian city is more than a few hours from the port.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) into Vilnius (VNO) serves moves where the timeline cannot absorb a long sea transit. Vilnius Airport does not generally receive direct passenger services from India, so air cargo to Lithuania routes through a European hub — commonly Frankfurt, Helsinki, Riga or Warsaw — with onward connection into VNO, putting an urgent shipment on the ground within several days rather than weeks. We are candid about the cost: air freight typically runs several times the per-kilogram cost of sea, and the right answer depends on whether your residence permit date, school term or office opening allows the slower mode.

Why the India end matters so much

Indian export clearance

Shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration, FEMA-aware documentation and Indian customs clearance managed at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin — so the shipment leaves India correctly and any GST refund or LUT position is preserved.

Lithuania’s customs regime

Electronic import declarations to the Lithuanian Customs (Muitiné), EORI registration where required, import VAT treatment confirmed in advance and EU transfer-of-residence relief claimed accurately for shipments of used personal effects.

Sea and air options

Sea via the Port of Klaipéda for household and commercial volumes (broadly 28 to 40 days); air via Vilnius through a European hub when the schedule demands it.

One coordinator, both ends

The same person manages your India packing survey, ICEGATE shipping bill and export documentation, sea or air dispatch, and Lithuanian delivery — no handover gaps between origin and destination.

Who moves on this corridor

  • Skilled professionals — software engineers, fintech specialists, data and laser-photonics talent from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi NCR joining technology employers and global business centres in Vilnius and Kaunas, typically on a Lithuanian National (D) visa and residence permit
  • Founders and startup talent — entrepreneurs and early teams arriving under Lithuania’s Startup Visa programme, drawn by the country’s reputation as one of the most accessible EU launchpads for a young company
  • Students and researchers — admissions to Vilnius University, Kaunas University of Technology and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University bring a steady flow of moves from India
  • Families joining settled relatives — spouses and children reuniting with a partner or parent already working in Lithuania, often after the principal has held a residence permit for some time

Where we deliver in Lithuania

We move regularly to all of Lithuania’s principal cities and their surrounding areas: Vilnius, the capital, with its Old Town, the Naujamiestis business district and the technology campuses on the city’s edge; Kaunas, the second city and a fast-growing manufacturing and shared-services base; Klaipéda, the port city on the Baltic coast; and Šiauliai in the north. We are familiar with the residence declaration step that follows arrival — the registration of a place of residence with the local municipality — and the way it interlocks with obtaining a personal code (asmens kodas) and finalising a residence permit. If your destination is not one of these cities, ask us — we deliver across the whole country.

Starting the move

  1. India-side survey. We assess volume and contents at your home or office in India — in person in major cities, or by video — and return a clear quote with sea and air options explained, including realistic Klaipéda or Vilnius arrival windows.
  2. Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations relevant to your move. We do not leave this to the last week.
  3. Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard from your India origin, and the shipment is booked and dispatched on the confirmed route to Klaipéda or, by air, to Vilnius.
  4. Clear and deliver in Lithuania. We manage the Muitiné import clearance, advise on EU transfer-of-residence relief, and coordinate onward road delivery to your address in Lithuania.

Choose the guide below that fits your situation, or request a quote and your coordinator will walk you through the right starting point for a move from India to Lithuania.
