Moving to Greece

Commercial Cargo & Freight to Greece

India–Greece commercial freight covers a broad spread of goods: pharmaceuticals and chemicals from Gujarat, marine equipment and engineering components destined for Greece’s shipping industry, textiles and apparel from Tirupur and Surat, foodstuffs and spices, and machinery for the construction and agricultural sectors. What ties these consignments together is a dual customs environment. The India side requires ICEGATE export clearance with the shipping bill, AD code registration and the right GST treatment — a Letter of Undertaking for zero-rated export, or the refund route where that applies. The Greek side applies the EU Common Customs Tariff through AADE’s electronic import system, with EORI registration, import VAT and HS code scrutiny. Both ends must be accurate, and crucially both must agree with each other. Seemleius commercial cargo and freight on this corridor is built around that requirement.

The India–Greece sea freight corridor

The primary freight route from India to Greece is sea: container vessels from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) and Mundra in western India, and from Chennai Port and Cochin in the south, calling at Piraeus. Piraeus is by a wide margin the largest container port in Greece and ranks among the busiest in the Mediterranean basin; its container terminals handle the great bulk of India-origin volumes and feed an extensive transhipment network across the Adriatic, the Black Sea and the eastern Mediterranean. Thessaloniki is the second gateway, serving northern Greece and offering onward connections into the Balkans. Port-to-port transit from Indian ports typically runs in the region of 18 to 28 days, depending on the service, the routing through the Suez Canal and any transhipment calls. From Piraeus, onward road delivery reaches commercial addresses across the Greek mainland, while consignments bound for the islands take a coastal ferry leg that has to be scheduled rather than presumed.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) into Athens International Airport (ATH) covers cargo that will not wait on sea transit — high-value pharmaceutical product, urgent spare parts, production-critical components and time-sensitive commercial samples. Routings are generally one-stop through a Gulf or European hub. We work through the right mode for each consignment with you, and we are candid about the cost differential rather than defaulting to whichever is easier to book.

Indian export documentation

ICEGATE shipping bill, AD code registration, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and, where relevant, RoDTEP and duty drawback claim handling — so the cargo leaves India with clean paperwork and the correct export-incentive position preserved.

Sea freight from Nhava Sheva or Chennai

Full container loads and consolidated groupage from India’s principal west and south coast ports into Piraeus and Thessaloniki — broadly 18 to 28 days port to port, with realistic ETAs we will not optimistically compress.

Greek commercial import clearance

EORI verification, electronic import declaration to AADE, HS code classification and EU import VAT treatment confirmed before arrival — because Greek customs holds cargo when the paperwork is incomplete or inconsistent.

Onward delivery and bonded storage

Road delivery from Piraeus to any mainland commercial address, ferry-leg coordination for island destinations, T1 and T2 EU transit document handling, and bonded warehouse options at Piraeus where duty deferral or pre-customs staging is needed.

Why the HS code and origin treatment must be right at the India end

The HS code assigned to your cargo in the Indian shipping bill determines the duty treatment it receives on arrival in Greece. A misclassification on the Indian export documentation produces a discrepancy at the Greek import stage that can lead to inspection, delay, back-duty assessment and a compliance flag against your EORI record. We confirm the classification before the shipping bill is filed — not after the cargo has reached Piraeus. The same discipline applies to the certificate of origin: with the India–EU Free Trade Agreement still under negotiation, the origin declaration and the applicable preference rules shape the duty outcome for many Indian export sectors, and getting the origin position right protects the landed cost your finance team has built into the contract.

Indian export sectors we work with regularly

  • Pharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients — handled with the temperature control, documentation, RoDTEP and EU regulatory requirements the market demands
  • Marine and shipping-sector supplies — equipment, spares and components serving Greece’s merchant fleet and the ship-repair and chandlery cluster around Piraeus
  • Textiles, garments and made-ups — from Tirupur, Surat and Ahmedabad, coordinated with Greek importers, distributors and retail supply chains
  • Engineering goods, machinery and industrial components — for the construction, agricultural and processing sectors across mainland Greece
  • Chemical and dyestuff exports from Gujarat — with the hazardous-goods IMDG classification, MSDS handling and documentation the sea route requires
  • Project cargo and exhibition material — including ATA carnet handling for temporary exports to Greek trade fairs such as the Thessaloniki International Fair

How a commercial shipment runs

  1. Brief us. Cargo description, HS code if known, value, weight and dimensions, origin in India, applicable GST or LUT treatment, RoDTEP eligibility, and the required arrival date in Greece.
  2. Quote and route. A clear freight quote with mode, realistic transit time, and the Indian export and Greek import documentation treatment explained — including any T1/T2 transit, ferry leg or bonded staging where it works in your favour.
  3. Document and book. ICEGATE shipping bill and export paperwork filed; AADE import documentation prepared; EORI verified; space booked and cargo collected from the India origin.
  4. Monitor and clear. Your coordinator tracks the shipment through transit and the Piraeus port process, manages the AADE import clearance, and confirms delivery at the Greek destination.

From a single consignment of pharmaceutical product to a recurring programme of marine supplies, the documentation rigour is identical — and it sits within the same India–Greece framework we set out on our moving to Greece overview. Request a freight quote and we will confirm the right approach for your cargo, your timeline and your compliance requirements.

Common questions about this move

Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.

Contact us
How long does a move to Greece take?

Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.

Do you handle customs at both ends?

Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.

Is my shipment insured in transit?

Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.

Will I have one point of contact?

Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
