Moving to Spain

A container leaving Jebel Ali for Spain joins a weekly rotation, calls Salalah, transits Suez and reaches Valencia or Algeciras roughly 17 to 21 days later, with Barcelona a day or two further on most strings. We can hand you the vessel name, the booking reference and a projected berthing window the day after your survey. That is the standard a move to Madrid, the Costa del Sol or the Catalan coast runs on, and it is the standard we have held on the UAE–Spain corridor across 22 years and 1,213 moves.

The people we carry into Spain fall into a few recognisable groups. There is the Golden Visa family swapping an Emirates villa for one above Marbella, the remote professional landing in Barcelona on the Digital Nomad Visa with a tight start date and the Beckham-law tax clock ticking, the couple retiring to a finca on the Costa Blanca after a working life in the Gulf, and the executive joining a Spanish operation in Madrid, Bilbao or Valencia. Each has a different cargo and a different deadline. What they share is a Spanish administrative sequence — the NIE, the customs declaration, the residence registration — that has to fall in the right order, or the shipment waits.

1. Survey and brief

   An in-person survey across Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, or a guided video walk-through, with volume measured in cubic metres and anything that changes its customs treatment flagged. Sea and air options come back against your Spanish start date and your visa timeline.

2. Documentation before sail

   The mudanza file is built with a Spanish-language inventory, your NIE, the residence visa or permit, UAE deregistration evidence and proof of the new address. ICS2 entry data is filed for the EU leg, and EUR.1 preference is raised where commercial cargo qualifies.

3. Export pack and dispatch

   Export-grade packing from the Emirates, ISPM-15 treated timber where the crating calls for it, and a booked rotation to Valencia, Barcelona or Algeciras — or air out of DXB to Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or Málaga when the schedule will not wait.

4. Clearance and delivery

   DUA lodged at the port, mudanza relief applied, container devanned and trucked inland. A convoy especial escort is arranged for any over-dimensional piece. The crew unpacks, reassembles the larger furniture and clears the debris on the same visit.

Sea and air routes

Sea freight from Jebel Ali lands at three working gateways. Valencia is the Mediterranean's busiest container port and the natural entry for Madrid, the eastern seaboard and most household traffic. Algeciras, across the bay from Gibraltar, is the closest deep-water port to the Costa del Sol and suits a Marbella or Málaga delivery. Barcelona serves Catalonia and the north-east, usually a day or two longer on the schedule. Bilbao is the Atlantic option for the Basque Country and the northern industrial belt. Air from DXB reaches Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Málaga in around seven to eight hours, and is the route for a part-shipment that has to be in place before the sea container catches up.

The DUA, the NIE and mudanza relief

Spanish customs is administered by the Agencia Tributaria through its Departamento de Aduanas, and the working document is the DUA — the documento único administrativo lodged at the port of entry. For UAE household goods the relief that matters is mudanza, the transfer-of-residence exemption that lifts both import duty and the 21% IVA from used personal effects. To qualify, the goods are owned and used for six months or more, you have been resident outside the EU, and you are moving your normal residence to Spain and claiming within the period the rules allow. The application leans on a Spanish-language inventory, proof of prior residence abroad, proof of the new address and your NIE — and the NIE has to exist before clearance, because the declaration is filed in your name. New boxed goods, commercial stock and certain vehicles fall outside the relief and are dutiable. Get the file right before the vessel sails and the box clears cleanly; get it wrong and it waits in the port at demurrage.

Used cars, the ITV and what cannot ship

A used car can travel, but Spain wants it roadworthy and re-registered before it can drive legally. That means the ITV (the inspección técnica de vehículos, Spain's roadworthiness test), import tax assessed on the vehicle, and registration with the DGT under Spanish plates. The economics only work for a car genuinely worth importing, and we will say so plainly at the survey. As for what does not ship: firearms and most regulated blades need a licence and rarely qualify, alcohol above personal quantities is dutiable, plants and seeds need phytosanitary clearance, and anything new and boxed reads as commercial. We flag all of it before packing rather than at the quayside.

Pets to Spain

Pets enter under the rules overseen by the Spanish agriculture ministry. A dog or cat needs an ISO microchip, a valid rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel, and an EU-format health certificate from an official UAE vet inside the pre-departure window. We coordinate the booking with an IPATA-registered pet agent and time the animal's arrival in Madrid or Barcelona to sit alongside the household delivery rather than ahead of an empty home.

Golden Visa and Digital Nomad Visa timing

A large share of UAE arrivals move on the Golden Visa or the Digital Nomad Visa, and both shape the freight plan. Golden Visa families often buy before they move, which gives a fixed completion date to ship against and a clean residence claim for mudanza. Digital Nomad moves tend to be faster — a start date, a Beckham-law tax election that rewards formalising residence early, and frequently a part-air, part-sea split so the working essentials land first. Whichever applies, the NIE and residence approval have to be far enough along that the customs file can be filed in your name when the container berths. We plan backwards from that point.

Industrial corridors and pricing

Commercial and corporate cargo runs into the same ports but onto different ground. Madrid anchors finance, headquarters and logistics; Barcelona pulls technology, design and pharmaceuticals; Bilbao and the Basque belt hold heavy engineering; Valencia pairs its port with ceramics, agriculture and a growing tech base. Pricing builds from volume, route, freight mode, customs treatment and the access at the delivery address — a top-floor flat in central Barcelona is not a villa with a driveway near Marbella. Every quote itemises freight, customs, haulage, packing and insurance, with no line folded into another to look tidier than it is.
