- 22 years moving households & cargo
- 1,213+ moves delivered door to door
- 4.8 / 5 200 client-feedback responses
- One coordinator from quote to delivery
An Italian arrival has a rhythm of its own. The shipment lands at Genoa or La Spezia, the comune wants a codice fiscale before the lease can register, the questura wants the lease before the residence permit moves, and the Agenzia delle Dogane wants all of it lined up before the container is released. We have run this corridor out of Jebel Ali long enough to know the order matters as much as the paperwork, and the coordinator on our desk has shipped enough Milan and Rome moves to spot the mismatches that hold a clearance.
Most of our UAE clients arriving in Italy fit a small number of patterns: a fashion or finance professional joining a Milan firm with a tight start date, a family relocating to Rome or Florence on a partner's intra-company transfer, an engineer heading to the Turin or Bologna industrial belt, or a founder opening a southern European base in Naples. Whichever pattern fits, the move runs on the same corridor and the same decisions, made earlier rather than later.
Italian customs, prepared not improvised
AIDA declarations, the codice fiscale tied to the consignee, and a trasloco file built against your inventory before the container clears Jebel Ali. The relief is straightforward when the documentation arrives complete; we make sure it does.
One coordinator across both ends
The coordinator, the coordinator or the coordinator owns your move from the UAE survey to the Milan or Rome delivery. No handover gap between origin and destination, and the same person answers your message at any hour of the corridor.
A corridor we actually run
22 years in business and 1,213 moves delivered, scored 4.8 out of 5 in our last internal client-feedback survey of 20 families. The Italian leg is one we know route by route, port by port.

AIDA clearance at Genoa, La Spezia, Livorno or Naples, road movement to your Italian address, unpacking by our partner crew and a sign-off walk-through.
The Dubai to Italy corridor in operational detail
Sea routes and ports
Jebel Ali is the origin for almost every full-volume household to Italy. Mainline services run via the Suez Canal into the Western Mediterranean, discharging at Genoa, La Spezia, Naples or Livorno depending on carrier rotation and final delivery. Typical port-to-port transit is 19 to 23 days on a direct call, longer where the routing involves a transhipment at Port Said or Tangier. Genoa is the workhorse for northern Italy because it feeds Milan, Turin and the Emilia-Romagna belt by a short road leg; La Spezia suits Florence and central Tuscany; Naples handles Campania and the Mezzogiorno; Livorno serves Pisa and the Tyrrhenian coast.
Air freight from DXB
Air runs out of DXB into Milan Malpensa (MXP), Rome Fiumicino (FCO), Venice Marco Polo (VCE) and Milan Linate (LIN). Direct flights are roughly six and a half hours, and a tightly packed air shipment can be in inland transit within a working day of touchdown. We use air for the start-date case, for high-value items moving separately, and for art or musical instruments that should not see a container's humidity swing across the Suez.
Italian customs, AIDA and the trasloco file
Italian customs runs through the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli on the AIDA platform. Every consignee needs a codice fiscale tied to their name before the clearance can be filed, which is why we treat that piece of paper as the first deliverable in the move. The personal effects relief for residents (declared as a trasloco, household goods on a documentation basis) exempts used personal property from import duty and from the 22 per cent IVA, provided the file is internally consistent: the inventory, the declared values, the residence evidence and the consignee identity all need to line up. A mismatch stops the container.
Restricted items, vehicles and pets
Used vehicles need IMQ certification and Codice della Strada compliance at the Italian end, with the original log book and a certificate of conformity where the make qualifies. Firearms are heavily restricted and require licence work before the shipment leaves the UAE. Wines and spirits in a household lot carry a duty and IVA implication regardless of the trasloco relief; we declare them transparently and pay the small amount due. Pets travel separately under the Ministero della Salute entry framework, with rabies titre and microchip records prepared in advance.
Industrial corridors and the Ferragosto reality
Italy's economic geography decides where your move lands as much as the contract does. Milan is the fashion, finance and design capital, with the Mediobanca and Generali head offices and the Pirelli orbit. Rome carries ENI and the international agencies. Turin remains the Italian automotive capital under Stellantis. Genoa is the historic port and shipbuilding centre; Naples handles Mediterranean trade. Over-dimension loads travel under trasporti eccezionali permits, which take real lead time and need the route surveyed before the truck rolls. Then there is Ferragosto: the August holiday period effectively closes Italian customs, hauliers and port handling for the bulk of the month. We schedule around it rather than fight it.
Transit bands and pricing realities
A sea-routed household from a UAE villa to a Milan apartment lands in a 28 to 35 day start-to-finish window from collection to unpack. An air-routed equivalent for essentials lands in 7 to 12 days. The pricing band is shaped by container utilisation, the season (peak European arrival is September), and whether the destination is a kerbside delivery or a fifth-floor walk-up with a permit window. We quote a number we can stand behind and we tell you the line items we have made assumptions on.
Three-bedroom villa, Jumeirah to Porta Nuova
A senior banker joining a Milan firm on a fixed start date, four adults and two children, a 40-foot container plus a 600 kg air shipment of essentials. The coordinator ran the AIDA pre-alert against a codice fiscale obtained through the Italian consulate in Dubai, sequenced the sea sailing to discharge at Genoa six days before the family's flight, and routed the air consignment into MXP for next-working-day delivery. The trasloco file cleared at first reading.
Five-employee mobility programme into Stellantis territory
A UAE engineering firm transferring five employees into the Turin automotive belt across an eight-week window. The coordinator built a shared coordination calendar with the client HR team, ran each shipment as a separate AIDA file, and consolidated the sea legs into a single Genoa discharge to share the inland trucking cost. Two of the five included used cars, both IMQ certified and registered within sixty days of delivery.
Trade-show cargo for a Mediterranean buyers' event
An exhibitor moving display equipment and sample stock from a Sharjah warehouse to Naples for a three-day Mediterranean trade event. The coordinator arranged a temporary import under an ATA carnet, prioritised an air consignment via FCO with onward truck to Naples, and re-exported the cargo on the same carnet within the show's official window. No duty paid and no clearance delay either side.
The coordinator was honestly the reason this move did not turn into a nightmare. We had a tight Milan start date and our codice fiscale was held up for three weeks, but she found a workaround through the consulate and the container cleared at Genoa with two days to spare. The packing crew in Dubai were careful with our daughter's piano and the team in Italy reassembled everything without a scratch.
We moved a four-bedroom villa from Abu Dhabi to Florence with three children and a dog. The coordinator coordinated the whole thing including the pet relocation through the Ministero della Salute, which the airline kept trying to make complicated. The container cleared at Livorno in two days and the unpack at our farmhouse took one full day with three crew. Worth every dirham.
Overall a strong job from the coordinator and the team. We had one delay at La Spezia where the trasloco file needed an additional residence document we had not been asked for upfront, which cost about four working days. They kept us informed daily and absorbed the demurrage themselves. I would book them again, just with the caveat that documentation surprises do happen.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Dubai to Italy move actually take?
Port to port on a direct service is 19 to 23 days into Genoa, La Spezia, Naples or Livorno. From start to finish, from your UAE collection to an unpacked Italian delivery, plan on 28 to 35 days for sea freight and 7 to 12 days for air freight.
Do I need a codice fiscale before my shipment can clear?
Yes. The Agenzia delle Dogane will not file an AIDA clearance against a consignee with no codice fiscale on record. We start that conversation early because the Italian consulate in Dubai can issue it before you fly.
Will I pay IVA on my household goods?
No, in most cases. The personal effects relief (trasloco) exempts used household goods from the 22 per cent IVA and from import duty, provided the file is consistent and the items have been owned and used by you for an appropriate period before the move.
Can I ship my car to Italy from the UAE?
You can, with caveats. The vehicle needs IMQ certification and Codice della Strada compliance at the Italian end, the original log book, and ideally a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer. Some makes clear easily; others require a homologation route that adds cost and time.
What happens if my move falls in August?
Ferragosto effectively closes Italian customs offices, ports and hauliers for the bulk of August. We either land your container in late July or hold it for an early September arrival rather than push a clearance through a closed corridor.
How does the pet relocation work?
Pets travel separately under the Ministero della Salute entry framework with a microchip, an EU-format health certificate, a rabies vaccination and a valid titre test where required. We brief you on the timing because the titre window is months not weeks.
Which Italian city should I route to?
Genoa serves Milan, Turin and the Emilia-Romagna industrial belt. La Spezia suits Florence and central Tuscany. Livorno feeds Pisa and the inland Apennine routes. Naples handles Campania and the south. Your final address decides, not the sailing schedule.
Do you handle commercial cargo as well as households?
Yes. Trade-show consignments under ATA carnet, machinery imports under standard commercial AIDA, project cargo with trasporti eccezionali permits, and consolidated freight for businesses opening Italian operations.
What does a typical full-household move cost?
It depends on volume, port pair, season and delivery access. We quote a defensible number after a survey rather than a brochure price, and we line-item what we have assumed so you can challenge it.
