Moving to Denmark

1. Survey and brief

2. Documentation before sail

   The flyttegods declaration is drafted with a clean inventory, residence permit or SIRI evidence and proof you are moving your normal residence to Denmark. Commercial lots get their EORI and EUR.1 preference paperwork raised in parallel.

3. Export pack and dispatch

   Export-standard packing from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, ISPM-15 timber where the load needs it, and a booked rotation to Aarhus or Copenhagen via the transhipment hub — or air to CPH when the schedule cannot wait.

4. Clearance and delivery

Sea and air routes

Denmark sits off the main east–west trade lane, so direct calls from the Gulf are rare. The working pattern is a mother vessel from Jebel Ali to a North European hub — Hamburg or Bremerhaven — then a short-sea feeder up to Aarhus on the Jutland coast, or to Copenhagen and the wider København gateway that includes the Kalundborg terminal across Zealand. Quay-to-quay this runs roughly 21 to 26 days, the spread driven mostly by how the feeder connection falls. Aarhus is the country’s largest container port and the natural entry for Jutland and Funen; Copenhagen suits Zealand. Air from DXB flies direct to Copenhagen in around seven hours, the route to reach for when the timeline is genuinely tight.

Toldstyrelsen, customs and flyttegods

Danish customs is administered by Toldstyrelsen under the wider SKAT structure, working to the common EU code. It is methodical rather than awkward: classification, declared value and supporting documents are expected to line up, and a file where the inventory, the declaration and the evidence tell one consistent story clears without drama. For UAE household goods the working basis is flyttegods — the EU transfer-of-residence relief that lifts duty and the 25% moms on used personal effects, where the goods have been owned and used six months or more and you are genuinely moving your normal residence to Denmark. Because Denmark is an EU member state, clearing at a Danish port clears your goods into the whole Union, which matters if onward movement within Europe is on the cards. New boxed goods and commercial stock sit outside the relief and are declared on their own footing; a EUR.1 movement certificate carries preference treatment on genuinely commercial cargo.

Used cars and the registration tax

Shipping a used car to Denmark is usually a false economy, and we say so plainly. Denmark levies one of the heaviest vehicle registration taxes in Europe — the registreringsafgift — assessed on the car’s Danish taxable value at first registration, and it can rival or exceed what the vehicle itself is worth. On top of that the car must pass a Danish roadworthiness inspection (syn) and be registered with Motorstyrelsen before it can legally drive. For most households the honest advice is to sell in the UAE and buy locally; we will only ship a vehicle once you have seen the registreringsafgift exposure in writing.

Pets, restricted items and what stays behind

Pets move under Fødevarestyrelsen, the Danish veterinary and food authority, on the EU framework: an ISO microchip, a valid rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel, and an EU animal health certificate from an official UAE vet inside the pre-departure window. We hand the animal to an established IPATA agent at the Copenhagen end. On exclusions, firearms need a Danish permit and most cannot travel with a household move at all, certain knives are prohibited, plants need phytosanitary clearance, and alcohol beyond personal quantities is treated as commercial and taxed. CPR, residence and arriving in order

Denmark runs on the CPR number, the central personal registration number issued when you register with the folkeregister at your local Borgerservice. Almost nothing functional happens without it — a bank account, a doctor, a tax record, a mobile contract, a school place all hang off the CPR. EU and non-EU arrivals take slightly different paths: non-EU residents generally settle their residence formalities through SIRI first, then register. Once you are in the system you receive MitID, the national digital identity that opens nearly every official service.
