Relocation & freight corridor

Moving to Ireland

Ireland is the UAE’s main English-speaking EU corridor — sea and air freight, well-understood customs, and a growing pull from Dublin’s tech sector.

  • 22 years moving households & cargo
  • 1,213+ moves delivered door to door
  • 4.8 / 5 200 client-feedback responses
  • One coordinator from quote to delivery

For UAE residents, Ireland has become the obvious European landing point, and the reason is plain. It is the only English-speaking member left in the EU after Brexit, so a relocation that elsewhere means learning the local administrative language alongside a new job, a new school run and a new home is, here, simply a move. Most of our Irish traffic lands in Dublin, where Google, Meta and LinkedIn run their EU headquarters and the data-centre and fintech roles cluster around the Docklands and the south-side suburbs. Cork follows, anchored by its pharmaceutical belt at Ringaskiddy, and Galway and Limerick round out the picture for med-tech and the growing midwest.

The people on this corridor sort into a handful of familiar shapes. A software or fintech professional taking an EU role at one of the Dublin tech campuses, often with a family and a school start to pin down. A pharmaceutical or process engineer heading to a Cork or Galway plant. An Irish citizen coming home after years in the Gulf, household and all. And the occasional commercial consignment bound for one of the industrial parks. The route is exacting on paperwork and slightly longer at sea than the direct European corridors, but run properly it is one of the steadier ones we operate. Across 22 years and 1,213 moves we have learned where it tightens.

Transfer of Residence prepared early

Irish Revenue grants Transfer of Residence relief on used personal effects owned and used outside the EU for six months or more, lifting both duty and the 23% VAT. We lodge the electronic C&E1076 before the container sails, not after it has landed and the clock is running.

Revenue AIS filed correctly

Almost every Irish import now passes through Revenue’s Automated Import System. A declared value that does not reconcile with the inventory holds the box at Dublin Port. Our agents pre-validate the AIS lodgement so the file reads cleanly first time.

PPSN sequenced against arrival

A Personal Public Service Number is needed before clearance on many bonded and vehicle flows, and it cannot be applied for until you are in the country. We map the PPSN appointment against the vessel ETA so nothing waits at the quay for a number you do not yet hold.

  1. Survey and brief

A UAE survey in person or by video, volume measured in cubic metres, and any item that changes its customs treatment flagged early. Sea and air options come back priced against your Irish start date and the school calendar if there is one.

  2. Documentation before sail

The Transfer of Residence file is built with the Irish inventory, your residence evidence and UAE deregistration proof. EORI confirmed for commercial flows, PPSN timing mapped, and the AIS data set readied so clearance is not improvised on arrival.

  3. Export pack and dispatch

Export-standard packing from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, with ISPM-15 timber where the crate calls for it. Booked onto a Jebel Ali rotation transhipping through a continental hub to Dublin Port or Cork, or flown DXB to DUB, SNN or ORK.

  4. Clearance and delivery

AIS lodgement at the port of entry, Transfer of Residence relief applied, then devanning and road delivery to your address in Dublin, Cork, Galway or Limerick. The crew unpacks, reassembles the larger pieces and clears the packing debris on the same visit.

The UAE–Ireland corridor in detail

Dublin Port, Cork and the sea route

Ireland is the western edge of the EU and an island, which shapes every routing decision. There is no road option from the UAE, and since Brexit the old UK landbridge — trucking across Britain between two ferry legs — has become slower and heavier on paperwork. The settled answer is now an EU-direct sailing. A box leaves Jebel Ali, tranships through Rotterdam or Antwerp, and completes the final leg to Dublin Port, which handles the bulk of household and commercial traffic. The Port of Cork, with deep-water capacity at Ringaskiddy, is the natural second option for moves into the Cork pharmaceutical cluster and the south. Quay-to-quay you should budget roughly 21 to 25 days, with the door-to-door window nearer 28 to 35 once transhipment, clearance and inland delivery are counted.

Air freight from Dubai

Air is the straightforward part of the corridor. Emirates and other carriers fly direct DXB to Dublin in around seven and a half hours, with onward feeds to Shannon (SNN) and Cork (ORK). Cargo can move inland within a working day of a clean clearance, which is why we often split a move — the things a family needs in the first fortnight by air, the bulk of the household by sea behind it on the same relief umbrella.

Revenue, the Automated Import System and Transfer of Residence

Revenue Commissioners is Ireland’s tax and customs authority, and the import now runs almost entirely through its Automated Import System. For a household, the filing that matters is Transfer of Residence relief, declared on the electronic C&E1076 ahead of arrival. Where it is granted, it removes customs duty and the 23% VAT on used personal effects, provided the goods have been owned and used outside the EU for at least six months and you are transferring your normal residence to Ireland. Without it, VAT at 23% falls on the assessed value of the goods, which on a full container is a real number rather than a rounding one. A Personal Public Service Number is required before clearance on many bonded flows and on vehicles, and because it can only be obtained once you have arrived, we treat its timing as part of the plan. New white goods, commercial stock and certain vehicle situations sit outside the relief; the file we build makes that distinction explicit so nothing is challenged at the desk.

Used cars, the NCT and what stays behind

A used UAE car can come, but it is rarely the economical choice. On import you face Vehicle Registration Tax, calculated on CO2 emissions and the open-market selling price, and the vehicle must pass the National Car Test — the NCT roadworthiness inspection — which applies from four years after first registration. Left-hand-drive UAE cars are legal but resell poorly into a right-hand-drive market, so for most movers the maths points the other way. Beyond vehicles, the usual exclusions apply: firearms need the correct Irish certification, plants and seeds require phytosanitary clearance, alcohol above personal allowances attracts excise, and anything new and boxed is read as commercial rather than personal effects.

Pets, restricted items and pricing

Pets move under the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). A dog or cat needs an ISO-standard microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, and entry through an approved route with the documentation DAFM specifies for a non-EU origin; dogs additionally require tapeworm treatment. We hand the animal to an IPATA-accredited handler at the Dubai end and meet it at the Irish end. On pricing, every quote is built from the same parts — volume, route, freight mode, customs treatment and delivery access — and itemised so freight, customs, haulage, packing and insurance read as separate lines rather than a single opaque figure. We do not quote a corridor average and hope; we quote your move.

Tech professional

Dubai Marina to Dublin Docklands

A software lead joining a US platform’s EU headquarters on a September start, partner and one child in tow, with a Ranelagh letting confirmed only weeks out. The coordinator split the move — priority air to DUB for the working kit and the child’s essentials, a sea container behind it from Jebel Ali through Rotterdam. The Transfer of Residence file was lodged before sailing and the PPSN appointment booked for the week of arrival, so clearance never stalled on a missing number.

Pharma transferee

Abu Dhabi to a Cork plant

A process engineer moving to one of the Ringaskiddy pharmaceutical sites on a fixed induction date. The coordinator routed the household by sea into the Port of Cork rather than railing it down from Dublin, which trimmed both cost and inland handling. AIS lodged against a reconciled inventory, relief applied cleanly, and the container devanned the week before the plant start.

Returning home

Sharjah to Galway after fourteen years

An Irish family coming home to the west after fourteen years in the Gulf, a four-bedroom villa condensing into a Galway house with a smaller footprint. The coordinator walked them through what would not fit before anything was packed, prepared the Transfer of Residence claim on goods comfortably past the six-month test, and timed the road leg from Dublin Port to land inside the school mid-term.

★★★★★

Took an EU engineering role in Dublin at short notice and panicked about shipping a whole flat in time. The coordinator put the laptop, the cot and a fortnight of clothes on a direct flight to DUB, then sailed the rest. The Transfer of Residence paperwork was done before the container left Jebel Ali, so nothing was held. We were unpacking in Ranelagh the weekend before I started.

We came home to Galway after fourteen years in Sharjah, which is a strange and emotional thing to do with a container. The coordinator told us honestly what would not fit the new house before we paid to ship it, handled the Revenue side without fuss, and the crew that unpacked were gentle with the things that mattered. Steady communication throughout — we always knew where the box was.

Aoife & Declan Brennan Returning resident · March 2026 — family move, Galway
★★★★☆

A Cork landing rather than Dublin added a day to delivery, and one carton was briefly held over a new sound bar I had forgotten to declare as a recent purchase. The coordinator filed the receipt as an addendum and Revenue released it the next morning. Not perfect, but honest when something needed sorting, and they never went quiet on me. I would use them again for the Ireland run.

Frequently asked questions — Ireland corridor

What is Transfer of Residence relief and do I qualify?

It is the Irish customs relief on used personal effects, declared to Revenue on the electronic C&E1076 before your goods arrive. You qualify if you are transferring your normal residence to Ireland and the items have been owned and used outside the EU for at least six months. Granted, it lifts both customs duty and the 23% VAT. We prepare and lodge the file as part of the move, not afterwards.

Do I need a PPSN before my shipment clears?

For many bonded flows and for any vehicle, yes — a Personal Public Service Number is needed for clearance, and it can only be applied for once you are in Ireland. We sequence the PPSN appointment against the vessel ETA so the number is in hand by the time the box is ready to clear.

What customs duty and VAT apply if relief is not granted?

Without Transfer of Residence relief, VAT is charged at the standard Irish rate of 23% on the assessed value of the goods, and duty may apply depending on classification. On a full household that is a substantial figure, which is precisely why the relief file is worth getting right before sailing.

Dublin Port or the Port of Cork?

Dublin Port carries most household and commercial traffic and is the default for the capital and the east. The Port of Cork, with deep-water capacity at Ringaskiddy, makes sense for moves into Cork and the south — it avoids railing a container down from Dublin and trims inland handling. We choose on your destination, not on habit.

Can I bring my UAE car, and what about the NCT?

You can, but it is seldom economical. Importing triggers Vehicle Registration Tax based on emissions and open-market value, and the car must pass the National Car Test, the NCT, which applies from four years after first registration. Left-hand-drive UAE cars also resell poorly here. For most movers, selling in the UAE works out better.

How do pets travel to Ireland?

Pets move under the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. A cat or dog needs an ISO microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and entry by an approved route, with tapeworm treatment for dogs. We pass the animal to an IPATA-accredited handler in Dubai and receive it at the Irish end.

Why is Ireland so popular for UAE tech relocations?

Because it is the only English-speaking country left in the EU after Brexit, and Dublin hosts the European headquarters of the major technology firms. For a UAE resident taking an EU role, that means residency and a career step without a language barrier landing on top of the move. The pharmaceutical and med-tech clusters in Cork and Galway draw the same logic.

What will not ship?

Firearms without the correct Irish certification, plants and seeds without phytosanitary clearance, alcohol above personal allowances, and anything new and boxed that reads as commercial rather than used personal effects. We flag these at survey so there are no surprises at the port.

How long does the move take?

Sea is roughly 21 to 25 days quay-to-quay from Jebel Ali, with the full door-to-door window nearer 28 to 35 days once transhipment, clearance and inland delivery are added. Air is far quicker — cargo can move inland within a working day of a clean DXB to DUB clearance. Booking four to six weeks ahead gives the relief file room to be right.

Who handles the Irish end?

We do. The same coordinator who runs your UAE survey oversees clearance at Dublin Port or Cork, the AIS lodgement, the Transfer of Residence relief and the final delivery, working with our Irish clearance and delivery partners. You deal with one person from the survey to the last carton unpacked.
