When UAE families ask what is most complicated about a move to Spain, it is rarely the furniture. The family pet and the car are the two things that generate the most questions — because both are subject to EU entry requirements that are precise, non-negotiable and not always obvious from the outside. Pet relocation to Spain

Spain applies the European Union’s rules for pets entering from a third country, and the UAE is a third country in EU terms. The requirements are not unreasonable, but they are time-sensitive: each step has to be completed in the correct order, and some carry fixed waiting periods that cannot be shortened. Get the sequence wrong or miss a step, and the animal cannot enter at the Spanish border.

The core sequence for a dog or cat travelling from the UAE to Spain is: an ISO-compliant microchip first, then the primary rabies vaccination after the chip has been implanted (never before), followed by a rabies antibody titration blood test at an EU-approved laboratory at least thirty days after the vaccination. From the date of that qualifying blood sample, a three-month wait applies before the animal may enter the EU. An EU Animal Health Certificate is then issued by an official veterinarian in the UAE within ten days of travel, and the animal must arrive in Spain through a designated Travellers’ Point of Entry where the documentation is checked.

Spain also operates its own rules once the pet is in the country. Several autonomous communities and municipalities require registration of the animal, and some maintain potentially dangerous dog (perro potencialmente peligroso) regulations that impose licensing, insurance and muzzle obligations for listed breeds. Vehicle shipping to Spain

Shipping a car from the UAE to Spain is more than the freight leg. There is UAE export documentation, EU import treatment, Spanish registration, a technical inspection and the matriculation tax — and we handle the logistics chain while being straightforward about the duty, tax and inspection costs so there are no surprises on arrival.

How the vehicle is treated by Spanish customs depends on whether it qualifies for transfer of residence relief. A car owned and used by the owner abroad for at least six months before the move, and which the owner will continue to use in Spain, can usually be imported under the transfer of residence provisions and exempted from the EU import duty and the 21% Spanish import VAT (IVA), provided it forms part of the residence transfer. Without that relief, duty and IVA are payable on the customs value of the vehicle.

Once cleared, the vehicle has to be made road-legal in Spain. It goes through the ITV — the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos — the technical inspection that confirms it meets Spanish safety and emissions standards; vehicles built to UAE specification sometimes need headlight, marker or emissions adjustments to pass. There is also the matriculation tax (Impuesto Especial sobre Determinados Medios de Transporte) assessed on the vehicle’s value and CO₂ emissions, although transfer of residence cases are often exempt where the conditions are met. Registration is then completed with the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT): the road tax is set up, insurance is registered and the Spanish plates are issued. Many city centres — including Madrid and Barcelona — also operate low-emission zones (Zonas de Bajas Emisiones) with a DGT environmental label requirement.
