Relocation & freight corridor

Moving to Switzerland

Switzerland sits outside the EU — imports require a full Swiss customs process. Seemleius moves UAE households, businesses and freight there by sea, road and air.

Switzerland has no coastline and no Swiss port, so every household leaving Jebel Ali for Zürich, Geneva, Basel, Bern or Lugano arrives the same way — sea to a European port, then road over the border. A box bound for the Gotthard route is containerised at Jebel Ali, calls Salalah, transits Suez and reaches Genoa or Hamburg in roughly 21 to 27 days, then trucks inland and clears at the Swiss frontier. We give you the vessel, the sailing reference and a working ETA the day after your survey — the standard a Swiss move runs on, and the one we have built into UAE shipments across 22 years and 1,213 moves.

The people on this corridor follow Switzerland’s industries: a banker moving from DIFC to Zürich’s Bahnhofstrasse with UBS or ABB; a scientist joining Novartis or Roche in Basel; a specialist heading to Geneva for the UN agencies, Roche or Pfizer; an EPFL-adjacent engineer settling in Lausanne or Vaud; a founder drawn to the Zug crypto valley; and the steady stream of tax-driven relocations the cantonal system makes worthwhile. The goods tend to be high in value, the timelines tied to a contract start, and the customs entry full — because Switzerland sits outside the European Union and grants no EU shortcut to anyone arriving from the Gulf.

Übersiedlungsgut prepared properly

Swiss transfer-of-residence relief lets used personal effects enter free of duty and the 8.1% import VAT when owned and used six months or more. We build the inventory and the e-dec dossier for the EZV before the container sails, not at the border.

Non-EU entry, planned from day one

Switzerland is a separate customs territory. Goods crossing EU soil move under a T1 transit document, and the real import is filed at the Swiss frontier. We treat it as a full Swiss clearance from the start, so nothing stalls at Chiasso or Basel.

One coordinator on the Swiss end

The coordinator, the coordinator or the coordinator owns the move from the UAE survey through the EZV clearance to the lift into a Zürich or Geneva flat. The Swiss broker and the inland haulier answer to one file.

  1. Survey and brief

A UAE survey or video walk-through measures volume in cubic metres and flags anything that changes the customs treatment — a used car, wine, a piano. Sea-and-road and air options come back against your Swiss start date.

  2. Documentation before sail

The Übersiedlungsgut declaration is drafted with a full inventory, your residence permit or work contract, and UAE deregistration evidence. The EZV e-dec file and the EU transit paperwork are lined up so the frontier crossing is a formality.

  3. Export pack and dispatch

Export-grade packing from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, with ISPM-15 timber where needed. We book the rotation to Genoa or Hamburg, or air from DXB to ZRH, GVA or BSL when the timeline is tight.

  4. Clear, truck and deliver

Inland trucking lifts the box off the quay; the EZV clearance is filed at the Swiss border with the relief applied. The crew unpacks, reassembles and clears the debris in Zürich, Geneva, Basel, Bern or Lugano on the same visit.

The UAE–Switzerland corridor in detail

Transhipment routing — why there is no direct Swiss leg

Switzerland is landlocked, so the sea leg always ends elsewhere. From Jebel Ali the two practical gateways are Genoa — the shorter Mediterranean run at 21 to 24 days, natural for Lugano, Lausanne, Geneva and the south over the Gotthard or San Bernardino — and Hamburg, longer at 24 to 27 days but with more frequent rotations and a clean Rhine-corridor run to Basel, Zürich and Bern. Whichever port handles the box, it is then trucked across the Swiss frontier where the real import clearance happens, so allow three to six days for the road leg and border formalities on top of the sea transit. Any quote that hides the transhipment is hiding a real cost.

Air freight from Dubai

When a contract starts before a container can arrive, air bridges the gap: DXB to Zürich (ZRH), Geneva (GVA) or Basel (BSL) is roughly seven to eight hours, cleared on the ground in a working day for a clean file. Many banking and pharma moves split the shipment — priority air for the urgent items, sea-and-road for the rest — under a single Übersiedlungsgut umbrella, so the inventory reads consistently across the airwaybill and the bill of lading.

Swiss customs — e-dec, the EZV and Übersiedlungsgut

The Eidgenössische Zollverwaltung (EZV, the Swiss Federal Customs Administration) runs e-dec as its electronic import system, and because Switzerland is not in the EU your goods face a genuine import entry rather than a member-state transfer. The household filing is Übersiedlungsgut — transfer-of-residence relief — which lets used personal effects enter free of duty and the 8.1% import VAT, provided they have been owned and used six months or more, you are taking up residence in Switzerland, and the declaration is lodged within twelve months against a complete inventory; new, boxed or commercial goods sit outside it. Because the goods cross EU territory first they travel under a T1 transit document opened at the port and discharged at the frontier; mishandle that transit and the box sits at Basel or Chiasso, which the advance file is there to prevent.

Cars, pets and restricted goods

A used UAE car can move, but it joins a Swiss process on arrival: cleared, assessed for duty and VAT, then presented for the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle (MFK), the cantonal roadworthiness and emissions inspection, before it can be registered. Modern Gulf-spec petrol cars usually pass, though for many residents a mainstream car is cheaper to sell in Dubai and replace in Switzerland; we cost both. Cats and dogs travel under the rules of the Bundesamt für Lebensmittelsicherheit und Veterinärwesen (BLV, the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office): an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel, and an official health certificate from a UAE government-authorised vet, with the live-animal leg handed to a specialist IPATA agent. Other items travel only with a permit or not at all: firearms and certain weapons need Swiss authorisation; wine and spirits above a personal allowance attract Swiss alcohol duty per litre, so a serious cellar is declared and costed; plants need phytosanitary clearance; and new boxed electronics read as commercial. We mark all of this at survey, because the surprise to avoid is a frontier hold over an item that should have been declared.

What a Switzerland move costs from the UAE

Three structural factors shape the price, and none is hidden. The sea leg to Genoa or Hamburg is the base freight, set by volume and the rotation you book; the transhipment and inland trucking to the Swiss address is a real, separate line — the road kilometres and border handling a direct-port corridor does not carry; and a Swiss broker files the e-dec entry at the frontier, claims the relief and settles duty or VAT on anything outside it. A one-bedroom on a shared container sits far below a four-bedroom villa taking a dedicated 40-foot box, and air is priced by chargeable weight. Every quote itemises freight, transhipment, haulage, customs and packing.

Banking transfer

DIFC to a Zürich flat by the Bahnhofstrasse

A senior banker on a March start with a Zürich house, moving a three-bedroom from Downtown Dubai against a fixed lease handover. The coordinator split the consignment — priority air to ZRH for the working setup, a sea container via Hamburg and the Rhine road for the rest — both cleared under one Übersiedlungsgut file, with the e-dec entry lodged before the box reached the border. The flat was furnished the week he started.

Pharma relocation

Abu Dhabi to a Basel research post

A research scientist joining the Basel pharma cluster, shipping a full household plus a modest wine collection. The coordinator routed the container through Hamburg for the frequent rotation, declared the wine separately for Swiss alcohol duty rather than risk a frontier hold, and timed the Rhine delivery to the apartment handover. The relief covered the household; only the cellar carried a small assessed charge.

Geneva posting

Dubai Marina to a UN role in Geneva

A specialist taking up a Geneva appointment with one of the international agencies, on a tax-considered relocation that needed the residence paperwork to line up with the customs file. The coordinator routed the box through Genoa for the shorter Mediterranean run, lodged the e-dec entry against the Geneva residence permit, and delivered into a Champel flat inside the start week.

★★★★★

Seven years in a villa in Arabian Ranches into a smaller Zürich flat, and the part I dreaded was the customs. The coordinator told us up front that Switzerland is not the EU and treated it as a full Swiss import from the first call. The container came in via Hamburg, the Übersiedlungsgut paperwork was done weeks ahead, and the crew was unpacking the Friday I started at the bank.

Moving to Basel for a research role with a household and a wine collection I cared about. The coordinator declared the wine properly for Swiss duty instead of hoping it slipped through, which is exactly the honesty you want. Routed through Hamburg, delivered down the Rhine to the day of the flat handover. Calm and precise throughout.

A Genoa landing instead of the Hamburg routing we first discussed added a day on the road to Geneva, and one carton was briefly held because an unboxed coffee machine read as new. The coordinator filed the receipt as a personal-effect addendum and had it released the next morning. Not perfect on the first pass, but straight about the cause and quick to fix it.

Frequently asked questions — Switzerland corridor

How long does a move to Switzerland take if there is no direct Swiss port?

The sea leg from Jebel Ali to Genoa runs about 21 to 24 days, and to Hamburg about 24 to 27 days, with three to six days on top for the inland trucking and the Swiss frontier clearance. Air from DXB to ZRH, GVA or BSL is around seven to eight hours plus a working day to clear.

What is Übersiedlungsgut and do I qualify?

It is Swiss transfer-of-residence relief. Used personal effects enter free of customs duty and the 8.1% import VAT when you have owned and used them six months or more, you are taking up residence in Switzerland, and the declaration is lodged within twelve months against a full inventory. New, boxed or commercial items fall outside it.

Why does Switzerland need a full customs entry when it sits in the middle of Europe?

Because it is not in the European Union and runs its own customs territory, with no EU transfer shortcut for goods from the Gulf. They cross EU soil under a T1 transit document, and the genuine import is filed with the EZV at the Swiss border — which is why we plan it as a Swiss clearance from the outset.

Should I route through Genoa or Hamburg?

Genoa is the shorter Mediterranean run and suits Lugano, Lausanne, Geneva and the south; Hamburg offers more frequent direct rotations and a clean Rhine-corridor run to Basel, Zürich and Bern. We pick the gateway that fits your destination and timeline, and tell you which we have booked.

Can I bring my UAE car?

Yes, but it is assessed for duty and VAT on arrival, then has to pass the MFK roadworthiness and emissions inspection before it can be registered. Modern Gulf-spec petrol cars usually pass. For a mainstream car it is often cheaper to sell in Dubai and buy in Switzerland; we cost both so you can choose.

How do pets get to Switzerland?

Under BLV rules: an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel, and an official health certificate from a UAE government-authorised vet close to departure. Switzerland tracks the EU standard closely, so a correct file clears at Zürich or Geneva. We pass the live-animal leg to a specialist agent.

What will not ship?

Firearms and certain weapons without Swiss authorisation, plants without phytosanitary clearance, fresh food and some medicines, and protected-species items. Wine and spirits above a personal allowance carry Swiss alcohol duty and are declared rather than hidden, and new boxed electronics read as commercial.

Who handles the Swiss end of the move?

One coordinator — the coordinator, the coordinator or the coordinator — owns the whole file, from the UAE survey to the e-dec clearance and the lift into your Swiss flat. The Swiss broker and the inland haulier work to that single file, so you have one contact rather than a chain of handoffs.

I am relocating partly for tax reasons. Does that change anything?

The shipping and customs mechanics are the same, but tax-driven moves hinge on the residence permit and cantonal registration lining up with the customs file, since the Übersiedlungsgut declaration leans on your taking up genuine residence. We time the e-dec entry to reference the right permit, and leave the tax structuring to your own adviser.

How far ahead should I book?

Four to six weeks before dispatch is comfortable for a full container, and gives the Übersiedlungsgut file room to be right. We can move faster on air and tight corporate timelines, but the transhipment routing rewards a little runway.
