Relocation & freight corridor

Moving to New Zealand

The UAE to New Zealand is one of the longest sea-freight corridors in the world — and one of the strictest for biosecurity. Seemleius manages the whole journey, including MPI clearance.

  • 22 years moving households & cargo
  • 1,213+ moves delivered door to door
  • 4.8 / 5 200 client-feedback responses
  • One coordinator from quote to delivery

Most moves to New Zealand land in one of four places. Auckland takes the bulk — the largest city and busiest port, and the first stop for returning Kiwis and skilled migrants. Wellington draws the public-service crowd and a tech scene grown around the harbour; Christchurch and the Canterbury plains pull in families after space; Queenstown sits at the end of the lifestyle wishlist. From the UAE, the people making this move fall into familiar groups — New Zealanders heading home after years in the Gulf, residence-visa holders starting fresh, technology and healthcare professionals on a recruited role, and retirees trading a high-rise for a garden.

One fact defines this corridor. New Zealand guards its border more tightly than almost anywhere we ship to. The sea leg runs through Singapore before a mainline vessel carries your container south, and on arrival the Ministry for Primary Industries inspects it before New Zealand Customs ever clears it. Get the biosecurity side right at packing and the rest runs to plan; get it wrong, and a single overlooked garden fork can hold an entire container. We have run this route for 22 years, and the work that matters happens in Dubai, long before the box reaches the water.

Biosecurity sorted before we pack

MPI inspects every shipment entering New Zealand. We walk your goods item by item at survey — the BBQ, the wooden furniture, the camping kit, the boots — deciding what is cleaned, treated or left behind, so nothing surprises an inspector.

Customs relief claimed correctly

Used household effects owned and used for over a year usually clear free of duty and GST under the unaccompanied-baggage concession. We prepare the NZCS 218 declaration and supporting evidence so the concession holds.

One coordinator, both ends

The person who surveys your home in Dubai stays with the file through the Singapore transhipment, the MPI inspection and delivery. You are not handed between desks — the coordinator, the coordinator or the coordinator owns it from quote to the last carton.

  1. Survey and biosecurity brief

A UAE survey or video walk-through, volume measured in cubic metres, and a frank pass through anything organic, wooden or soiled. We flag what MPI will want treated and give you an honest timeline including the Singapore leg.

  2. Documentation and treatment

NZCS 218 prepared for the unaccompanied-baggage concession, a detailed inventory built for the MPI declaration, and heat treatment or methyl bromide fumigation arranged for wood and garden items before the container is sealed.

  3. Export pack and sail

Export-standard packing from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, ISPM-15 compliant crate timber, then a booked feeder out of Jebel Ali to Singapore and a mainline rotation south to Auckland, Lyttelton or Wellington.

  4. MPI, Customs and delivery

We present the shipment for MPI inspection, clear it through New Zealand Customs, manage any treatment the inspector calls for, and arrange road delivery. The crew unpacks, reassembles and removes the debris.

The UAE–New Zealand corridor in detail

Routes, ports and air

There is no direct sailing from the Gulf. A container loaded at Jebel Ali moves first on a feeder leg to Singapore, then joins a mainline vessel south. Auckland — served by Ports of Auckland and the deepwater Port of Tauranga — is the default North Island discharge point; Lyttelton serves Christchurch and the South Island, and Wellington handles the lower North Island and capital. Quay-to-quay runs roughly 28 to 34 days on a clean transhipment, and we give you the vessel, slot reference and projected ETA once the survey is done. Air from DXB serves Auckland (AKL) and Christchurch (CHC), usually one-stop, landing priority cartons in days. We often split a move: a small air consignment for what is needed first, a sea container for the rest, both under one declaration.

MPI biosecurity — the part most people underestimate

New Zealand runs the strictest border in the trade, and it is not posturing. Its farming and natural environment evolved in isolation, so an introduced pest can do lasting damage. MPI inspects every shipment, and anything that has touched soil or grown out of the ground gets attention — garden tools, the barbecue, hiking boots, bicycle tyres, even a vacuum cleaner with old dust in it. Wooden items and crate timber need heat treatment or methyl bromide fumigation and ISPM-15 marking. Items that fail are treated at your cost or refused entry, and an undeclared high-risk item can see the whole container held. The corridor turns on the cleaning and declaration done in Dubai, which is why we do it with you before a single box is taped shut.

New Zealand Customs and the duty position

Once MPI is satisfied, New Zealand Customs Service handles the entry. Personal and household effects owned and used for twelve months or more before shipment normally clear free of duty and GST under the unaccompanied-baggage concession, declared on Form NZCS 218. Anything bought shortly before the move, or still effectively new, falls outside it and attracts 15% GST plus any duty. The NZCS 218 also triggers the MPI inspection, so the two are worked together from the start.

Restrictions and over-dimensional loads

Some things simply do not go: fresh food, honey, seeds, plants and untreated plant material, ivory and certain animal products, and firearms without a New Zealand police permit. Soil in any form is a hard no — a potted plant or a bag of compost is the fastest way to a problem — and we give you the full exclusion list against your inventory at survey. If you are bringing something large — a boat, a vintage car, oversized machinery — the road leg may need an over-dimension permit from NZTA, sometimes with pilot vehicles, and we handle the permit and haulage so the final mile is not the bottleneck.

Pets and vehicles

New Zealand is strict on animals and the timelines are long, so this starts early. Cats and dogs from the UAE follow a defined pathway: microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and a rabies antibody titre test from a blood sample with a waiting period before travel, then time in an MPI-approved quarantine facility on landing. A missed titre date can cost months, so we hand the live-animal side to a specialist IPATA partner and sequence it alongside the household shipment. A car can come too, but a used import goes through entry certification with VINZ — emissions, frontal-impact standards, odometer and ownership checks, and a biosecurity look at the underside — before it can be registered. We tell you honestly whether yours is worth shipping or whether buying on arrival is smarter.

What it costs, and why

A New Zealand move sits above shorter corridors for three reasons: the transhipment means freight reflects two ocean legs rather than one direct sailing; MPI inspection is charged on every shipment, with fumigation or heat treatment billed on top if the inspector calls for it; and port handling at Auckland, Tauranga or Lyttelton carries its own cost base. We quote each line on its own — freight, transhipment, customs, MPI, treatment allowance, haulage, packing and insurance — so the total is clear before you commit, with no lump sum hiding the biosecurity exposure.

Returning Kiwi family

Dubai to Tauranga after nine years away

A family heading home to the Bay of Plenty after nearly a decade in the Gulf, with a garden shed's worth of tools and a much-loved barbecue. The coordinator went through the lot at survey, had the BBQ degreased and the wooden-handled tools heat-treated, and routed the container to Tauranga for the shorter road leg. MPI inspected it on arrival and passed it without a hold — nothing left to find.

Professional relocation

Abu Dhabi to a Wellington tech role

A software lead on a recruited contract with a fixed start date and a flat near the waterfront. The coordinator split the move — a small air consignment to AKL for the work setup, a sea container to Wellington for the rest — both cleared on one NZCS 218. The air boxes were on the desk in week one; the household goods followed on schedule weeks later.

Lifestyle migrant

Dubai to a Queenstown move

A couple selling up in the UAE for a place in the Wakatipu basin, with mountain bikes, ski gear and a lot of outdoor kit — exactly the cargo MPI scrutinises hardest. The coordinator had the tyres and boots cleaned of every trace of soil, documented each treated item, and routed the box through Lyttelton with the long South Island road leg planned in. It cleared first time.

We were dreading the biosecurity side — we had heard the horror stories about containers held for weeks. The coordinator made us go through everything in Dubai, treated the garden gear, and told us to leave a couple of things behind. The shipment landed in Tauranga and MPI passed it the same day. Worth every dirham.

Starting a job in Wellington with a hard date, I needed my work things fast and the rest could follow. The coordinator split it into air and sea without me having to ask — laptop and desk gear in the first week, the container a month on. Calm, clear emails the whole way. No drama at customs either.

Lyttelton to Queenstown is a long haul and the road leg took a day longer than I had pencilled in, sliding the unpack to a Monday. The coordinator had warned me it might, so it was on me for hoping otherwise. Everything else — the biosecurity prep, the fumigation paperwork, the clearance — was handled properly. Honest about the timing, which I value.

Frequently asked questions — New Zealand corridor

Why is New Zealand's biosecurity inspection such a big deal?

MPI inspects every shipment, not a sample. The isolated ecology means an introduced pest can do permanent harm, so anything organic, wooden or soiled is examined closely. A shipment cleaned and declared properly in Dubai clears without drama.

What gets confiscated or held at the border?

Undeclared garden tools, dirty boots and a trace of compost in a pot have all triggered holds. Declared and cleaned, the same items usually pass — it is the undeclared one that holds the container.

What needs heat treatment or fumigation?

Wooden furniture, timber items, garden equipment, the barbecue and the timber in your packing crates. They are heat-treated or fumigated with methyl bromide and marked to ISPM-15, arranged in the UAE before the container is sealed.

How long does the shipment actually take?

Plan on roughly 28 to 34 days quay-to-quay from Jebel Ali to Auckland or Christchurch on a clean transhipment through Singapore, then add days for MPI inspection, customs clearance and road delivery. It is one of the longer corridors we run, and we give you a realistic figure.

Will I pay duty and GST on my household goods?

Usually not on used personal effects. Items owned and used for twelve months or more before shipment generally clear free of duty and GST under the unaccompanied-baggage concession on Form NZCS 218. Newly bought or near-new items fall outside it and attract 15% GST plus any duty.

What are the pet timelines I need to watch?

The rabies antibody titre test is the one that catches people: a blood sample, a mandatory waiting period before travel, then time in an MPI-approved quarantine facility on arrival. A missed titre date can cost months, so we start the pet pathway with a specialist partner well ahead of the household move.

Can I bring my car?

You can, but a used import goes through entry certification with VINZ — emissions, frontal-impact standards, odometer and ownership checks, and a biosecurity look at the underside — before it can be registered. We give you a straight answer on whether yours is worth the cost.

What simply cannot be shipped?

Fresh food, honey, seeds, live plants and untreated plant material, soil and compost, ivory and certain animal products, and firearms without a New Zealand police permit. We run the full prohibited list against your inventory at survey.

I'm a returning New Zealander — is it any different for me?

The concession and biosecurity rules work the same way, but returning residents often ship a wider mix — years of accumulated garden gear, tools and outdoor kit, precisely MPI's high-risk cargo — so we give returning Kiwi households extra time at survey.

Who handles the New Zealand end?

We do, through our agents on the ground. The coordinator who ran your move from Dubai stays on the file through MPI inspection, Customs clearance and delivery — one point of contact rather than a handover when the box lands.

Ready to plan your New Zealand move?

Tell us when, what, and where — One of our team will come back to you within a working day, usually much sooner.
