Importing a cat or dog requires an import permit issued in advance by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST), and — critically — every imported cat and dog must complete a mandatory quarantine period in an approved Icelandic quarantine facility on arrival. This is not optional, it cannot be waived, and it cannot be served at home. An animal that arrives without a valid permit, or outside the permitted conditions, will not be allowed to enter.

The process therefore has to be planned months ahead, not weeks. The broad sequence for a dog or cat moving from the UAE to Iceland is: confirm the animal is an eligible species and breed — certain dog breeds are not permitted entry at all — then apply to MAST for the import permit before any travel is booked. The permit conditions set out the required ISO-compliant microchip, vaccinations, a rabies antibody (titer) blood test taken at an approved laboratory, and a series of treatments and veterinary checks, each of which must be done in the correct order and within defined timeframes. Quarantine space is limited and must be reserved in advance; the permit and the quarantine booking go together. Vehicle shipping to Iceland

Shipping a car from the UAE to Iceland involves more than the freight. There is UAE export documentation, Icelandic customs treatment through Skatturinn, registration with the Icelandic transport authority and a roadworthiness inspection — and because Iceland is in the EEA but not the EU customs union, the import is a standalone Icelandic clearance, not an EU one. The customs treatment depends on whether the vehicle qualifies for transfer-of-residence relief. Without that relief, Icelandic customs duty and the standard 24% VAT are assessed on the customs value of the vehicle. Once cleared, the vehicle must be registered with Samsýsla (the Icelandic Transport Authority) and pass a roadworthiness inspection at an approved station before it can be driven legally.
