Moving to Iceland

1. Survey and brief

2. Documentation before sail

Transhipment routing and a realistic timeline

Because no liner runs Jebel Ali to Iceland directly, the practical route is two legs. The first carries your container to a North-Europe hub — usually Rotterdam or Hamburg — on a mainline rotation. At the hub it transfers onto one of the dedicated Iceland services, Eimskip or Samskip, which sail a regular schedule up to Reykjavík. Quay to quay, Jebel Ali to the Reykjavík port runs around 28 to 35 days, the variation driven by the connection window at the hub and the weekly cadence of the Iceland sailing. Add a few working days for Skatturinn clearance and a short road leg into the capital region. The timeline is longer than a German or Dutch move for one reason — the transfer — and it behaves predictably once the booking is set against the right connection.

Air freight via a European hub

There is no direct DXB to Keflavík flight; air freight connects through a European gateway and lands at Keflavík (KEF), about 50 kilometres from Reykjavík. Air suits a modest volume, a tight start date, or the working essentials that must be in place before the sea container arrives. It is dearer per cubic metre, so the usual pattern pairs a small priority air consignment with the main sea shipment, both under one inventory so Skatturinn sees a single coherent import.

Skatturinn customs, VSK and buslod relief

EEA membership gives Iceland the single market but keeps it outside the EU customs union, so a shipment is never “cleared into Europe” and then waved across. It is declared to Skatturinn — Iceland Revenue and Customs — as a distinct import, with VSK (Icelandic VAT) at the standard 24% and any applicable duty assessed there. Against that, most arriving residents qualify for buslod, the transfer-of-residence relief: personal household effects owned and used for 12 months or more come in free of import duty and VSK, provided they are genuinely your used belongings and you are relocating your home rather than importing for sale. New purchases and goods bought shortly before departure sit outside it. Skatturinn expects a clear inventory, evidence of the residence change and proof of prior ownership, which we assemble with you before sailing so the relief is granted cleanly rather than queried at the port.

Bringing a used car

A used vehicle can be imported, but Iceland taxes it heavily, and that needs saying plainly. On top of any duty, VSK at 24% applies, and a separate excise charge banded by CO2 emissions is assessed against the car, which on a typical UAE SUV can come to a large share of its value. It must also meet Icelandic registration and roadworthiness rules once landed. For many movers the tax and effort outweigh the value, and selling in the UAE then buying locally works out better. Pets and the MAST quarantine rules

This is the point that catches people, so we put it early in planning. Iceland’s Food and Veterinary Authority, MAST, runs one of the strictest pet-import regimes anywhere. Bringing a cat or dog requires an import permit applied for in advance, a defined sequence of vaccinations and blood tests in the months before travel, and a mandatory stay in an approved quarantine facility on arrival. That permit and testing schedule frequently set the critical path for the whole relocation, well ahead of any furniture. Kennitala and what you arrive into

Daily life in Iceland runs on the kennitala, the national identification number issued by Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá). A bank account, a tenancy, a salary, a doctor and a child’s school place all depend on it and on a registered legal domicile. Non-EEA nationals, UAE passport holders included, normally need a residence permit confirmed before the move, after which the kennitala and domicile registration follow on arrival. Restricted goods and pricing

Some things do not travel or need their own paperwork: firearms and ammunition are tightly controlled, certain foodstuffs and plants face restriction or phytosanitary checks, and alcohol above personal allowances is excluded. New boxed electronics and commercial stock are treated as trade goods and lose the buslod relief.
