The UAE–Iceland freight corridor

The single most important point on this corridor is that Iceland, while part of the European Economic Area, is not in the EU customs union: clearing cargo into an EU port does not clear it into Iceland.

Skatturinn and Icelandic import clearance

Commercial cargo entering Iceland is declared to Skatturinn, the authority responsible for both revenue and customs. Iceland applies its own customs tariff and its own value-added tax — a standard VAT rate of 24%, with a reduced rate on certain categories — and that VAT is generally recoverable for VAT-registered Icelandic businesses through the regular return. An Icelandic consignee registered with the tax authority is needed for cargo to clear in its name. Because the EU customs union stops at Iceland’s border, an EU customs transit document does not substitute for an Icelandic import declaration; the consignment is a separate import event and is treated as one.

Iceland’s EEA membership and its free-trade arrangements can give preferential or duty-free treatment to qualifying goods, but eligibility depends on the origin of the cargo and the supporting origin evidence travelling with the shipment — not on the route it took. We confirm the duty position with the correct origin documentation rather than assuming preferential treatment applies. For temporary movements — exhibition stock, demonstration equipment, professional tools coming in and going back out — an ATA carnet is often the cleanest mechanism, and we prepare and present it for clearance.

Why classification accuracy matters on this corridor

The commodity code assigned to your cargo determines the duty rate, the VAT base and any licensing or restriction that applies — and an incorrect classification surfaces as delays, back-duty, penalty interest and compliance friction that costs far more than getting it right at the outset.
