Moving to Hungary

Employee Relocation to Hungary

Relocating employees from the UAE to Hungary has become steadily more common across the automotive, engineering, shared-services and technology sectors — and the volume of moves that HR and mobility teams handle on this corridor is rising. The difficulty is never any single move; it is making dozens of them consistent, compliant and manageable as a programme. Seemleius employee relocation to Hungary is built for that scale, with the documentation discipline that NAV customs and the Hungarian residence-permit system both require.

Why Hungary moves need programme thinking

Hungary adds layers that many other destinations do not. On the immigration side, a relocating employee from the UAE — a non-EU national — will usually arrive on an EU Blue Card for higher-skilled hires, an Intra-Company Transfer permit, or a combined work-and-residence permit, each with its own evidence requirements, processing windows and family-reunification rules. On the move side, the landlocked routing means the shipment crosses Europe by sea and then inland, so timing has to be planned, not assumed. If that preparation differs every time — different vendors, different documentation, different levels of care — the inconsistency shows up as delays, cost variance and avoidable employee stress. We build it consistently from the start, aligned to the permit pathway so the shipment lands in the right window.

The address card drives the shipment timeline

Hungary requires new residents to register their place of residence with the local district office, which issues the lakcímkártya — the official address card. Alongside the tax number (adóazonosító jel), the address card is the document that unlocks almost everything else: a bank account, healthcare registration, utility contracts and school enrolment. For non-EU employees the residence permit comes first, and the address card follows once a permanent home is secured.

This has direct consequences for how the household shipment is timed. If an employee’s shipment arrives before they have a confirmed permanent address, there is nowhere to deliver it — and on a route where the sea leg is followed by an inland leg, an early arrival means costly storage. If it arrives too late, the employee lives out of suitcases longer than necessary. We coordinate the sea or air freight from Jebel Ali or DXB so it lands shortly after the employee has secured housing and registered the address — not before, and not weeks after.

What the programme covers

Policy-aligned moves

Every relocation to Hungary runs to your mobility policy — volume caps, entitlements, approvals — without requiring you to police each one.

Customs handled for each employee

NAV import documentation and the transfer-of-residence relief application prepared accurately for every move — the employee does not navigate it and neither does HR.

Employee support

The relocating person has one coordinator from UAE survey to Hungarian delivery — reducing stress and the questions that would otherwise come back to HR.

Consistent records

Quotes, inventories and invoices in a consistent format across every move, ready for finance and mobility reporting.

Schools and the language question

Employees moving with children find that the Hungarian state school system teaches in Hungarian, which makes it a demanding option for a child arriving mid-assignment without the language. International schools — offering English-language, IB or other curricula — are concentrated in Budapest, with a smaller number of options in Debrecen and the larger regional cities, and they are the usual choice for employees on fixed-term assignments. Places can be limited, so early application matters, and enrolment generally requires the address card. We flag this in the planning conversation so the housing search and the school search move together.

Tax, healthcare and the first month

The first month in Hungary is procedural by design. The residence permit is collected or activated; the address registration produces the lakcímkártya; the tax number is issued; the employer registers the employee for social insurance and the state health system (administered through the TAJ social-security number); and a local bank account is opened. We brief each relocating employee on the sequence and what to have ready — passport, visa, lease agreement, and marriage and birth certificates if family is joining — so their first week is about settling in, not chasing paperwork.

How the programme works

  1. Align the programme. We map to your mobility policy once — entitlements, documentation standards, reporting format, permit pathways — so every Hungary move runs the same way.
  2. Initiate a move. HR refers the employee; we survey in the UAE, prepare the NAV documentation, align the shipment timing with the residence-permit and address-registration sequence, and return a policy-checked quote.
  3. Manage the relocation. Packing, sea via Jebel Ali or air via DXB, EU import clearance and the inland leg into Hungary are coordinated for the employee, with HR updated at each milestone.
  4. Report. You receive consistent documentation and status reporting across every move — ready for finance, audit and mobility programme review.

Whether you move a handful of employees a year to Hungary or run a sustained programme for a global engineering organisation, the service scales without losing consistency. Contact us
How long does a move to Hungary take?

Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.

Do you handle customs at both ends?

Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.

Is my shipment insured in transit?

Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.

Will I have one point of contact?

Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
