Moving to Hungary

Hungary sits at the centre of Europe rather than on its edge, and that shapes every move into it. There is no Hungarian seaport — the country is landlocked — so a shipment from the UAE arrives only after it has crossed a European border at least once. The good news is that this is a well-worn route, and once the planning accounts for it, the move runs predictably. What makes the Hungary corridor distinct

Hungary is an EU member state, so once your goods clear customs they are in free circulation across the whole Union — but Hungary has no coastline of its own, which means the sea leg ends elsewhere. From Jebel Ali, two routings are common. The first lands at a northern European port such as Hamburg or Bremerhaven and then moves south by rail or road. The second — often shorter overall for Hungary — lands at an Adriatic port such as Koper in Slovenia or Rijeka in Croatia, then runs the final leg overland into Hungary. Both put the customs clearance and the onward inland transport into the plan as distinct, costed stages. Air freight from DXB into Budapest Ferenc Liszt International (BUD) is the option when the timeline is tight.

Hungarian customs is administered by the National Tax and Customs Administration — the NAV. As with any EU customs authority, the declaration, the valuation and the inventory have to agree with one another. Transfer-of-residence relief on personal effects

Most people relocating from the UAE to Hungary qualify for the EU’s transfer-of-residence relief on used personal belongings. Broadly, household goods that you have owned and used for at least six months, and that you are bringing because you are genuinely moving your normal residence to Hungary, can be imported free of customs duty and import VAT. NAV expects supporting evidence — a detailed inventory, proof that you are establishing residence in Hungary, and confirmation that you lived outside the EU beforehand. The relief is real and worth having, but it is granted against documentation, so the documentation has to be right. We prepare it with you before anything ships.

What you arrive into

Hungary runs on its own paperwork. New residents register their address with the local district office and receive a lakcímkártya — the official address card — which, alongside a tax number (adóazonosító jel), unlocks almost everything else: a bank account, a doctor, school registration and utility contracts. Non-EU nationals also need a residence permit, and that timeline tends to set the rhythm of the whole move. The currency is the forint, not the euro. We flag the sequence in the planning conversation so the housing, the permit and the shipment all line up sensibly.

2. Document in advance. Dates are confirmed, vessel or aircraft space is booked, and the NAV import paperwork — the transfer-of-residence relief application and supporting evidence — is prepared and checked before the shipment leaves the UAE.
3. Pack and ship. Our crew packs to export standard, builds a complete inventory, and dispatches on the booked route from Jebel Ali or DXB.
4. Clear and deliver. We manage EU import clearance for Hungary and coordinate the onward inland leg, delivery, unpacking and reassembly at your address.
