DALRRD requires an import permit issued in advance of travel, valid for a defined window. The permit is issued only when the supporting veterinary documentation is in order, so the sequence matters: vaccinations first, FAVN rabies titer next, permit application after, travel last. Working backwards from the South African arrival date, the protocol takes approximately 90 to 120 days from start to flight.
The vaccination and FAVN sequence
- Microchip and identification. ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip implanted, recorded against the pet’s passport and all subsequent documentation.
- Rabies vaccination. Primary or booster rabies vaccination administered by a registered veterinarian in India and recorded with batch number and date.
- FAVN rabies titer test. A blood sample is drawn at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination and tested at an OIE-approved laboratory — in India, NABL-accredited laboratories handle the FAVN test (Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titer). The result must show an antibody titer of 0.5 IU/ml or higher.
- 30-day post-vaccination wait. South Africa requires a minimum 30-day waiting period after vaccination before the FAVN sample is drawn, and a further waiting period before entry. Build this into the plan.
- DALRRD import permit. Application filed with the FAVN result, vaccination certificate, microchip number and travel details. Permit issued in advance of departure.
- Veterinary export certificate. Issued by an Indian government-authorised veterinarian within 10 days of departure, confirming health and the absence of contagious disease.
- IATA crate and flight. IATA-compliant travel crate, sized to the pet, water and feed provision, ventilation. Direct flights from BOM or DEL to Johannesburg on pet-friendly carriers are preferable to minimise transit stress.
On arrival at O.R. Tambo, the pet clears through the DALRRD inspection point with the permit, the FAVN result and the veterinary export certificate. There is no quarantine for compliant arrivals from India — the inspection is procedural and the pet leaves with the family on the day.
Vehicle relocation: India to South Africa
Importing an Indian vehicle into South Africa is procedurally well-defined and benefits from the right-hand-drive match between the two countries.
