Families moving from India to Iceland frequently ask two questions that sit outside the household shipment: can the dog or cat come, and is it worth bringing the car? The honest answer to the first question is that it is possible but it is genuinely demanding — Iceland operates one of the strictest animal-import biosecurity regimes in the world, and it is unlike anything the EU applies. The answer to the second is yes, with conditions. Both require planning that starts at the India end, and the pet timeline in particular needs to begin many months before the move. Relocating a pet from India to Iceland — read this first

Iceland is an island that has historically been free of several animal diseases found elsewhere, and it protects that status with import controls that are far stricter than the EU’s. Importing a cat or dog into Iceland is not a matter of simply meeting EU pet-travel rules. Every imported cat and dog requires an import permit issued in advance by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (Matvælastofnun, known as MAST). The number of permits and the conditions attached to them are tightly managed, and an animal cannot travel until the permit is granted.

Critically, Iceland requires imported cats and dogs to undergo a mandatory quarantine period on arrival. Animals are not released to their owners at the airport; they are placed in an approved quarantine facility for a fixed isolation period set by MAST, and space at these facilities is limited and must be booked well ahead. A pet owner relocating from India must plan for that quarantine period as a firm part of the timeline — it is not optional, it cannot be waived, and it cannot be served at home. Before travel, the animal must also complete an extensive programme of vaccinations, blood tests, parasite treatments and veterinary examinations specified by MAST, carried out in a precise sequence and within precise time windows. Some of these steps, including rabies antibody titre testing, carry their own waiting periods, which is why the overall preparation can take many months.

India adds its own export requirements. The Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (AQCS) issues the Indian export health certificate, and a No Objection Certificate from the relevant Indian authority is required for certain species or for any animal subject to CITES controls. The animal must be examined by an authorised veterinary officer and its microchip verified before the Indian certificate is issued. These India-side steps run alongside the MAST-mandated preparation and must all be complete and correctly sequenced before the animal can fly.

Shipping a vehicle from India to Iceland

Moving a car or motorcycle from India to Iceland involves Indian export documentation — the RC book, a No Objection Certificate from the RTO, the AD code and an ICEGATE shipping bill for the vehicle — followed by sea freight and an Icelandic registration process. Because there is no direct service, the vehicle travels from Nhava Sheva or Mundra to a northern European transhipment hub and on by feeder to Reykjavík, with the cargo handled either in a container or, where suitable, as Roll-on Roll-off.

On the customs side, Iceland is in the EEA but not the EU, so the import is declared to Skatturinn (Iceland Revenue and Customs) as its own process. Iceland applies import charges to vehicles — including VSK (value-added tax) at 24% and, depending on the vehicle, charges linked to its emissions — and a transfer-of-residence relief may reduce the burden where the vehicle has been genuinely owned and used by the family at the India address before the move and where the relocation and ownership conditions set by Skatturinn are met. Eligibility for that relief must be checked against the current Icelandic rules before the vehicle is shipped, not assumed.

Before an imported non-EEA-specification vehicle can be used on Icelandic roads, it must pass inspection and be registered with the Icelandic Transport Authority (Samgöngustofa). The inspection assesses whether the vehicle meets Icelandic technical and safety standards, and modifications are sometimes required before a vehicle built to Indian specification will pass.
