Bringing your pet from India to Canada

Canada’s pet import requirements are governed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and vary by species, breed, age and province of entry. For dogs and cats — the most common case for Indian families emigrating to Canada — the requirements centre on vaccination documentation, a health certificate issued by an officially accredited veterinarian in India, microchipping to ISO 11784/11785 standard, and rabies vaccination records. Where a rabies titre test is required, the blood sample must be processed at a NABL-accredited laboratory in India to be recognised. The CFIA also maintains breed-specific rules; certain breeds face provincial restrictions in Ontario (pit-bull-type bans) and other jurisdictions, which affects the documentation required and, in some cases, the choice of destination city or province.

Dogs must have a rabies vaccination at least 30 days before entry if vaccinated for the first time. Puppies under three months old and unvaccinated dogs face additional requirements. Cats do not require rabies vaccination for entry into Canada — but a health certificate is still required. Birds, exotic pets and other species face stricter CITES-related controls and CFIA permits.

Shipping your vehicle from India to Canada

Exporting a vehicle from India requires clearance from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the state of registration, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the RTO, deregistration of the vehicle in India, and Indian CBIC customs export clearance with a shipping bill on ICEGATE against the company or individual’s AD code. These steps take time — the RTO process alone can run several weeks in some states. Starting late on the vehicle documentation is the most common cause of a delayed departure.

At the Canadian end, a vehicle imported as part of a new resident’s settler’s effects may qualify for duty-free import under that provision, but the documentation must clearly establish that relationship. Canada also requires that vehicles meet Transport Canada’s admissibility list and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS) under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act; a vehicle built to Indian Bharat Stage VI specifications may require inspection or modification before it can be registered and driven in Canada. The Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) programme governs this: a Form 1 is filed on entry, the vehicle undergoes the RIV federal inspection within 45 days, and only then can provincial registration proceed. Provincial sales tax varies (Ontario HST, BC PST plus GST, Alberta GST only, Quebec QST).
