The journey begins on the India side: export customs clearance through ICEGATE, preparation of the shipping bill under the Customs Act, AD code registration with the originating port, and packing built to survive a multi-leg sea voyage of around 4,500 nautical miles. Albania has no deep-sea container terminal sized for direct long-haul calls, so India–Albania shipments almost always route via a Mediterranean transhipment hub — commonly Piraeus in Greece or Gioia Tauro in Italy — before a feeder vessel or short overland leg completes delivery. Getting the India end right is what keeps that multi-leg chain on schedule.
Freight routes & customs
Sea freight is the backbone for household and commercial volumes. Containers leave Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and tranship in the Mediterranean before feedering into the Port of Durrës — Albania’s principal cargo gateway — or arriving via Vlorë. Realistic port-to-port transit, including transhipment dwell, runs roughly 30 to 42 days depending on routing and feeder schedules. From Durrës, onward road delivery reaches Tirana and the rest of the country within a day.
Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) routes via a European or Gulf hub into Tirana International Airport (Nënë Tereza, TIA) — there are no direct services, so expect a one-stop itinerary. Albanian import formalities are handled by the Albanian Customs Administration (Drejtoria e Përgjithshme e Doganave). Returning nationals and new residents can claim transfer-of-residence relief on used household goods owned and used for at least the qualifying period before the move; we confirm the current evidence requirements — residence permit, prior-residence proof and a detailed valued inventory — before the shipment sails.

Shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration and Indian customs clearance managed at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin — so the shipment leaves India correctly documented for a transhipment route.
