The family pet and the car are the two things that generate the most questions — because both are subject to EU entry requirements that are specific, time-sensitive and not always obvious from the outside, and because Slovakia is landlocked, so neither simply arrives at a port. Pet relocation to Slovakia

Slovakia applies the EU’s rules for pets entering from a third country, and for animals travelling from the UAE those rules are detailed and strictly enforced. The requirements are not unreasonable, but they are sequential: each step has to be completed in the correct order, and some carry fixed waiting periods that cannot be shortened. Miss a step or get the order wrong, and the animal cannot enter the EU.

The core sequence for a dog or cat travelling from the UAE to Slovakia is: an ISO-compliant microchip first, then a primary rabies vaccination after the chip has been implanted — never before — then a rabies antibody (FAVN titer) blood test at an EU-approved laboratory taken at least thirty days after vaccination, and then a mandatory three-month wait from the date of that qualifying blood sample before the animal may enter. An EU animal health certificate is issued by an official UAE veterinarian close to travel, and the animal must enter the EU through a designated traveller point of entry, where the documentation is checked. Where the pet flies into Vienna as the gateway, entry into the Union takes place there before the short onward transfer into Slovakia.

Once in Slovakia, dogs are generally registered with the local municipality, and many towns and cities levy a local dog tax — the amount and the rules vary from one self-governing region and municipality to the next. Vehicle shipping to Slovakia

Shipping a car from the UAE to Slovakia involves more than the freight. There is UAE export documentation, EU import treatment, a technical inspection and Slovak registration — and because the country is landlocked, the vehicle is shipped to a European port and then carried inland. We handle the logistics chain and ensure the documentation is in order, and we are straightforward about the duty, registration and inspection costs so there are no surprises on arrival.

The treatment of the vehicle at Slovak customs depends on whether it qualifies for transfer-of-residence relief. A vehicle owned and used by the owner at the previous residence — normally for at least six months before the move — and which the owner will continue to use in Slovakia can usually be imported under that relief and exempted from the 10% EU import duty and the 20% Slovak VAT. The relief is applied for alongside the household goods. Without it, duty and VAT are payable on the customs value of the car.

Once cleared, an imported vehicle must pass a technical and emissions inspection — the kontrolná a emisná kontrola at an authorised station — and, where the car was not built to EU type approval, an individual approval process that confirms it meets European technical, lighting and safety standards. UAE-specification headlights, side markers and emissions equipment frequently need adjustment or replacement to pass. The vehicle is then registered at the district vehicle registration office (the dopravný inšpektorát): Slovak plates are issued, the registration certificate is produced, motor third-party liability insurance is put in place, and any motor tax position is settled. We coordinate each of these steps so the car is road-legal at delivery.
