Slovakia is a quietly capable place to land. It sits at the centre of Europe with the Tatra mountains to the north, the Danube along its southern edge, and a manufacturing economy that punches well above the country’s size. For a UAE family or business making this move, what matters in practice is that Slovakia is landlocked, so the route in is never a single straight line. It is a sea or air leg followed by an inland one, and getting that handover right is precisely what Seemleius does on the Dubai–Slovakia corridor.

The UAE–Slovakia route carries a particular mix of moves: automotive and engineering professionals joining the plants around Bratislava, Trnava and Žilina, families relocating for a calmer pace and cost of living, and businesses setting up shared-service or production operations in Košice and Nitra. It is a corridor we know in detail — how freight from Jebel Ali reaches a landlocked country, and the rhythm of arriving into a smaller EU member where the paperwork is methodical and the welcome is genuine.

What makes the Slovakia corridor distinct

Slovakia has no coastline, so there is no port of entry of its own. Sea freight from Jebel Ali routes either to a northern European port — Hamburg or Bremerhaven — or to the Adriatic at Koper in Slovenia or Rijeka in Croatia, and then continues by rail or road into Slovakia. The Adriatic routing often gives the shorter inland leg for shipments heading to Bratislava and the west. Sea transit to the European port typically runs in the region of three to five weeks depending on routing, with the inland leg added on top. Air freight from DXB arrives via Bratislava (BTS), with Vienna (VIE) just over the border as a well-connected alternative gateway — a short road transfer brings goods across into Slovakia.

Slovak customs is part of the EU customs union, and clearance is handled by the Finančná správa — the financial administration. The process is not punishing, but it is procedural: the inventory, the declared values and the supporting documents need to agree with one another. We prepare everything in advance so that what the Slovak authorities see is consistent and complete the first time.

Transfer of residence: EU relief on personal effects

Most arriving residents qualify for EU transfer-of-residence relief, which exempts used personal household goods from import duty and the 20% Slovak VAT. The goods must have been owned and used at the previous residence, normally for at least six months, and the person must be genuinely transferring their normal place of residence to Slovakia. A customs declaration is filed with the Finančná správa alongside evidence of the move and a detailed inventory. The relief is granted on the strength of the documentation, so we build that file with you before the shipment leaves the UAE.

The UAE–Slovakia corridor at a glance

Sea & air freight

Sea via Jebel Ali to Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Koper or Rijeka with onward rail and road into Slovakia — air DXB to Bratislava, or via Vienna, when the schedule is tight.

Slovak customs handled

EU import documentation, the transfer-of-residence relief application and the supporting inventory prepared accurately for the Finančná správa, in advance.

Landlocked routing solved

The sea or air leg and the inland leg planned as one chain — so the handover from port to rail or road never becomes a gap in the schedule.

One coordinator

A single point of contact owns your move from the UAE survey to the Slovak delivery — no information lost between freight, customs and inland vendors.

Where in Slovakia we deliver

We move regularly to all of Slovakia’s major destinations and their surrounding regions:

  • Bratislava — the capital on the Danube, the financial and corporate centre, and the natural landing point for most international arrivals
  • Košice — the eastern metropolis, a growing technology and shared-services hub with an established industrial base
  • Žilina — a northern manufacturing city at the heart of the automotive supply chain and the gateway to the Tatra region
  • Nitra — a centre of automotive production and agriculture in the fertile southwest
  • Prešov — an eastern regional centre near Košice, with engineering and logistics employers
  • Trnava — an automotive and manufacturing town within easy reach of Bratislava

What you arrive into

Slovakia is a country of registered residence. New arrivals report their place of stay to the foreigners’ police — a registration of residence for EU citizens, or a temporary residence permit for those from outside the Union. Registration leads to the rodné číslo, the birth number that functions as the national personal identifier and is needed for almost everything practical: a bank account, health insurance, a lease, the tax office and school registration. We flag the sequence in the planning conversation so the household shipment and the housing arrangements line up with these steps.

How the move works

  1. Survey and quote. We assess volume and contents — in person in the UAE or by video — and return an itemised quote with the freight routing options for a landlocked destination explained.
  2. Document in advance. Dates are confirmed, freight space and the inland leg are booked, and the Slovak customs paperwork is prepared and verified before the shipment leaves the UAE.
  3. Pack and ship. Our crew packs to export standard, builds a complete inventory, and dispatches on the booked route from Jebel Ali or DXB.
  4. Clear and deliver. We manage EU import clearance and the inland transfer, then coordinate onward delivery, unpacking and reassembly at your Slovak address.

Pick the guide that fits your move

A family relocating a Bratislava apartment and an engineering firm transferring a production team to Žilina are on the same corridor but planning very different moves. Each situation has its own dedicated guide below. Pick the one that matches you, or request a quote and your coordinator will point you to the right starting point.
