EU customs, EORI and import VAT

Portuguese standard import VAT is applied on top of any duty and is recoverable by VAT-registered businesses through the normal periodic return. Goods of preferential UAE origin can, where the relevant trade arrangement applies, clear at a reduced or zero duty rate provided valid origin documentation accompanies the shipment — we arrange this with the UAE exporter where it is relevant.

For cargo destined onward into other EU member states, or for goods that need to move under duty suspension to a customs warehouse, EU external and internal transit procedures allow VAT and duty to be settled at the correct point in the chain. For temporary movements — exhibition stock, demonstration equipment, professional tools returning to the UAE — an ATA carnet is often the cleanest mechanism, and we prepare and present it for clearance.

The HS code assigned to your cargo determines the duty rate, the VAT base and any licensing or restriction that applies.
