Pets & Vehicle Relocation to India

Families returning to India from the UAE often bring their pets, and sometimes their vehicles. Both involve specific Indian import regimes, both carry lead times that cannot be compressed once the move date is set, and both benefit from being treated as part of the main relocation plan rather than items sorted out separately at the end. On a corridor where the Jebel Ali to Nhava Sheva sea transit is already a fixed five to nine days, adding a pet or a vehicle late creates avoidable pressure on dates that are not flexible. Pet relocation to India

Pet imports into India are governed by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD) and operationally administered by the Quarantine & Certification Service (QCS), with stations at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru. Dogs and cats coming from the UAE — which is not a rabies-free country in the eyes of Indian authorities — have a specific compliance pathway that must be initiated well in advance of the move:

• ISO 11784/11785 microchip implanted before any vaccinations are administered, so vaccination records are tied to the chip ID
• Rabies vaccination current, with the vaccination history documented; for first-time vaccinations, a thirty-day wait before titre is standard
• Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT) showing serum antibody level above the WHO threshold, drawn at an OIE-approved laboratory; many Indian quarantine pathways require this for animals from non-rabies-free origins
• UAE veterinary health certificate issued by a UAE Ministry of Climate Change & Environment-approved veterinarian within the window prescribed before travel
• No Objection Certificate (NOC) / import permit from DAHD obtained in advance for the specific Indian port of entry — without it the pet cannot clear
• QCS quarantine reservation where applicable at the destination station, booked ahead of travel as space is limited

The permit and the RNATT alone make this a process that needs to start six to eight weeks before the move, sometimes longer. We coordinate with accredited pet-handling partners who work this corridor regularly and who know the current Indian protocols for animals coming from the UAE. The animal’s journey is planned around your main move dates so there is no gap between your arrival in India and your pet’s.

Shipping a vehicle to India

Vehicle import into India is among the more complex elements of a returning-resident move. Outside the Transfer of Residence relief, customs duty on imported vehicles is substantial: Basic Customs Duty, IGST and cess together can approach or exceed the vehicle’s landed value, depending on engine capacity, fuel type and CIF value. Under TR, a returning resident who has lived overseas continuously for at least two years and has owned and used the vehicle for at least one year prior to return may bring in one car (and certain two-wheelers) at concessional rates. The relief is meaningful but its conditions are precise, and the documentary trail — UAE registration history, insurance, the year of ownership — has to be in order before the vehicle leaves Dubai.

Several other Indian-specific points sit alongside the duty position. The vehicle must comply with applicable Indian regulations, including emission norms (Bharat Stage VI is the current standard for new vehicles, with separate provisions for imported used vehicles), right-hand drive requirements, and homologation including a Type Approval Certificate where required. Once landed and cleared, the vehicle has to be registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the state of residence, which involves road-tax payment at the state rate and number-plate issue.
