Moving to India

Commercial Cargo & Freight to India

Commercial cargo and freight from the UAE to India — sea and air freight to six major ports and cities, Indian customs handled, from start to finish.

The UAE–India trade corridor is one of the highest-volume freight routes in the region. The two economies are deeply linked: the UAE is consistently among India’s top trading partners, and goods, equipment, materials and commercial stock flow constantly in both directions. For businesses shipping from the UAE into India, the corridor is well-established but it is not a corridor where attention can lapse. Indian customs — administered by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) — has specific classification, valuation, documentation and pre-arrival filing requirements, and they are enforced at the port. Get it right and the corridor is fast and cost-effective; get it wrong and a consignment sits at the Container Freight Station while detention and demurrage charges accumulate against your account.

The Indian customs framework, in summary

Commercial imports into India clear through a Bill of Entry filed electronically on the ICEGATE portal by a licensed Customs House Agent (CHA). The shipping line files an Import General Manifest (IGM) on arrival, and the Bill of Entry is matched against it. Duty exposure on imports comprises Basic Customs Duty (BCD) under the Customs Tariff Act, IGST under the Integrated Goods and Services Tax Act — typically 18% on standard commercial goods but item-specific — and, where applicable, Social Welfare Surcharge and GST Compensation Cess. Correct HS classification at the eight-digit Indian Customs Tariff level is what drives the duty calculation, and a misclassification is the most common reason a consignment is held for assessment.

For regular importers, the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) scheme offers expedited clearance, deferred duty payment, and reduced examination rates — worth pursuing if your volume justifies it. Bonded warehousing under Section 58 of the Customs Act allows goods to be held duty-paid only on removal, useful where the import is destined for re-export, processing, or where duty cash-flow matters. ATA Carnet covers temporary imports of professional equipment, exhibition goods or commercial samples, and is recognised at major Indian ports and airports.

Sea freight to India

Sea freight carries the bulk of commercial cargo on this corridor. Full-container loads (FCL) for large shipments, Less-than-Container Load (LCL) consolidations for smaller consignments. We route to the Indian port that best serves the final delivery address:

  • Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mumbai — India’s largest container port; the default for cargo destined for Mumbai, Pune and the broader western corridor; typical transit five to nine days from Jebel Ali
  • Mundra, Gujarat — the country’s most efficient private port, well-placed for north Indian inland destinations including Delhi NCR via the Dedicated Freight Corridor; typical transit five to seven days
  • Chennai and Krishnapatnam, Tamil Nadu / Andhra — principal eastern-coast gateways for southern India; Chennai also handles auto and component traffic
  • Cochin, Kerala — the south-west gateway, including the International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadam
  • Tuticorin (V.O. Chidambaranar) — secondary southern option for cargo destined for Tamil Nadu and the Kerala border districts

Inland delivery from the port to the final commercial address — including cross-state hauls, multi-modal where rail makes sense from Mundra, and last-mile to factory or warehouse — is coordinated as part of the shipment.

Air freight to India

For time-critical cargo, high-value goods, or consignments that cannot wait on a sea schedule, we arrange air freight from Dubai International (DXB) and Al Maktoum (DWC) into the major Indian cargo airports: Chhatrapati Shivaji Mumbai, Indira Gandhi Delhi, Kempegowda Bengaluru, Chennai International and Rajiv Gandhi Hyderabad. Air bill of entry filing, customs examination and last-mile delivery are coordinated through our air-cargo CHA at the gateway.

Sea freight (FCL & LCL)

Full-container and consolidated loads from Jebel Ali, routed via Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin to suit the inland destination.

Air freight

Time-critical and high-value commercial cargo from DXB and DWC into India’s major cargo airports, cleared and delivered.

Indian customs (CBIC)

HS classification, Bill of Entry filing via ICEGATE, BCD and IGST treatment, and AEO / bonded / Carnet routes where applicable — handled through licensed CHAs at every Indian port we use.

Last-mile delivery

From the Container Freight Station or airport to the final commercial address — planned and costed as part of the shipment from quote stage.

How a commercial shipment runs

  1. Brief us. What is shipping, its eight-digit HS code or accurate description, dimensions, weight, declared value, the final delivery address in India, the delivery window, and any specific compliance points such as restricted items or licence requirements.
  2. Quote and route. We return a clear quote with freight mode, Indian port routing, realistic transit time, the customs duty exposure, and the last-mile delivery leg included.
  3. Book and document. Freight space booked from Jebel Ali, DXB or DWC; cargo collected; Indian import documentation including the Bill of Entry data, HS classification and any required certificates prepared before the shipment leaves the UAE.
  4. Monitor to delivery. Your coordinator tracks the consignment through IGM filing, BoE assessment, examination if selected, port clearance and final delivery, and confirms arrival.

Recurring commercial freight or a single consignment, this corridor is one we know in detail and run to a standard. Request a freight quote and tell us what is moving and where in India it needs to land.

Common questions about this move

Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.

Contact us
How long does a move to India take?

Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.

Do you handle customs at both ends?

Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.

Is my shipment insured in transit?

Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.

Will I have one point of contact?

Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
