Pets and vehicles entering Switzerland from outside Europe face requirements that are specific to Swiss law and the FSVO (Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office) regime, and the details need to be understood clearly before the move is planned. Bringing a pet to Switzerland — FSVO rules

Switzerland’s pet import rules are administered by the Bundesamt für Lebensmittelsicherheit und Veterinärwesen (BLV), better known by its English acronym FSVO. The framework aligns broadly with the EU pet travel scheme for third-country entries but with Swiss specifics. For UAE-origin animals the requirements are manageable but precise:

• ISO-compliant microchip (15-digit, implanted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination)
• Rabies vaccination administered after microchipping, with a valid certificate
• Rabies antibody titre test (FAVN test) — required for animals from countries outside the EU/EEA approved list, which currently includes the UAE — followed by a mandatory waiting period of three months from the date of blood sampling before entry into Switzerland
• Official health certificate issued by an official UAE government vet within ten days of travel and endorsed for Switzerland
• Entry at an approved point of entry, typically Zurich or Geneva airport, with most pets travelling as manifest cargo — not as checked baggage — which requires advance booking with an accredited live-animal handler

Specific breed rules apply. Switzerland has restrictions on certain dog breeds classed as potentially dangerous, and several cantons (notably Geneva, Valais and Ticino) maintain stricter cantonal bans or specific keeping requirements. The cat rules are more straightforward but the same microchip-vaccinate-titre-certify chain applies. The titre test waiting period means pet relocation to Switzerland from the UAE needs to be planned at least four months in advance, and we map all of this to your household move timeline at the start, not when you are three weeks from departure.

Importing a vehicle into Switzerland

Switzerland is not in the EU’s customs union, so importing a vehicle does not benefit from the simplified arrangements available within the bloc. A UAE-registered vehicle entering Switzerland is declared on Form 13.20A (vehicle import declaration) at the Swiss border and is subject to Swiss customs duty, the Swiss vehicle import tax, and Swiss VAT at 8.1 per cent on the assessed value. Once cleared, the vehicle has to pass an MFK inspection (Motorfahrzeugkontrolle, the Swiss equivalent of an MOT, conducted by the cantonal Strassenverkehrsamt) before it can be registered and driven on Swiss roads. After the first MFK, vehicles are then re-inspected typically every four years thereafter.

Veteranenfahrzeug — classic car relief

Owners bringing in a classic or veteran vehicle should be aware of the Veteranenfahrzeug regime. A vehicle officially classed as Veteranenfahrzeug (typically more than thirty years old, in substantially original condition and used only for limited purposes) benefits from reduced motor vehicle tax in many cantons and from less frequent MFK inspections — usually every six years rather than four. Cantonal motor vehicle tax varies significantly across the country, and the Veteranenfahrzeug classification is granted by the cantonal authority, so the canton of intended registration is part of the conversation. The financial gap between shipping the car and selling and replacing it locally is sometimes meaningful, and we are open about what the numbers look like.
