Commercial Cargo & Freight to Sweden
Commercial cargo and freight from the UAE to Sweden — sea and air into an EU point of entry, customs handled, with seasonal and routing considerations managed.
Sweden is a mature freight destination within the EU single market. Gothenburg — Scandinavia’s largest container port — handles the bulk of inbound cargo, and the country’s domestic logistics network connects it cleanly to commercial addresses across the rest of Sweden and onward into the Nordic and EU markets. For UAE exporters shipping into Sweden, the EU customs framework provides a consistent and well-understood import process. The practical considerations tend to be the routing (frequently with transhipment through Hamburg or Antwerp), the classification work, the 25% Swedish VAT (MOMS), and the seasonal impact on inland logistics.
Tullverket, TDS and the Swedish customs environment
Sweden’s customs administration is Tullverket, and its electronic clearance system — TDS (Tulldatasystemet) — handles the majority of inbound declarations. Tullverket operates as the Swedish arm of the EU Customs Union, which means an entry filed at Gothenburg, Arlanda or any other Swedish customs office releases the goods into free circulation across the entire EU. The mechanics of the entry are largely standard EU procedures: HS classification, valuation, duty calculation under the Common External Tariff, VAT (Swedish MOMS at the standard 25% rate, one of the highest in the EU) and any applicable EUR.1 preferential origin treatment.
An EORI registration is required for the importer of record. UAE exporters using a Swedish consignee or a Swedish establishment of their own group will use the Swedish EORI; exporters acting as importer of record into Sweden directly need their own EU EORI in place before the first shipment. We confirm that piece up front rather than at the port.
Routing into Sweden
Sea freight from the UAE into Sweden routes through the Suez Canal and into the North Sea. The natural call is Gothenburg, the country’s primary container port, with onward road or rail to the final Swedish address. In practice, many UAE–Sweden sea services tranship through Hamburg or Antwerp rather than calling directly at Gothenburg, which can extend the door-to-door transit by several days but commonly improves overall reliability and service frequency. Total transit ex-Jebel Ali is typically 25 to 30 days. For smaller and consolidated loads, other Baltic and North Sea ports with onward road transport are also viable, and we assess the trade-off on each booking.
Air freight from DXB to Stockholm Arlanda is direct in roughly seven to eight hours, with Gothenburg Landvetter as the alternative for west-coast cargo. Both have full customs clearance infrastructure and are appropriate for time-sensitive or high-value commercial shipments.
Seasonal logistics is a genuine consideration for cargo scheduled into Sweden in winter months. Road access to commercial premises can be affected by snow and ice, particularly for deliveries outside the major urban centres and to addresses in northern Sweden. We factor seasonal timing into the freight planning and flag any access considerations for specific delivery addresses.
VAT, duty and preferential origin
Swedish MOMS at 25% is one of the higher EU VAT rates, and for commercial imports it is the dominant tax line on most consignments. Duty rates follow the EU Common External Tariff and vary by HS code; correct classification at the entry stage is the single most useful piece of preparation. Where the goods qualify for preferential origin under an EU free-trade arrangement, an EUR.1 certificate (or, for lower-value consignments, an origin declaration on the invoice) reduces or eliminates the duty line — not the MOMS. The UAE itself does not currently have a comprehensive EU free-trade agreement that grants preferential origin to UAE-origin goods, so EUR.1 treatment typically applies to goods that originate in third countries with EU agreements (Turkey, EFTA, certain partner countries) and merely transit through the UAE; we assess origin position on a per-consignment basis.
T1, T2, ATA carnet and bonded warehousing
Where goods are entering Sweden but not staying — for onward movement to another EU member state, for return to the UAE after a Swedish exhibition, or for short-term in-bond storage at Gothenburg — we work with the appropriate transit and temporary-admission instruments. T1 (external transit) is used for non-Union goods moving under customs control across the EU; T2 (internal transit) handles Union goods through non-EU territories. An ATA carnet covers temporary admission for exhibitions, professional equipment and commercial samples without the duty and MOMS line. Bonded warehousing at Gothenburg suspends the import-tax position for goods awaiting onward sale or movement. We confirm at booking which instrument fits the shipment.

How a commercial shipment to Sweden runs
- Brief us. Nature of goods, declared value, weight, dimensions, HS codes, origin position, EORI status, and the delivery window required in Sweden.
- Quote and route. We assess the routing options — direct or transhipment via Hamburg/Antwerp for sea, ARN or Landvetter for air — and return a clear quote with transit times, duty, 25% MOMS and customs treatment explained.
- Book and document. Freight space is secured, cargo collected from your UAE location, and all Tullverket TDS documentation prepared in advance of departure — transit instruments selected where appropriate.
- Track to delivery. Your coordinator follows the shipment through port handling, Tullverket clearance and onward road transport, and confirms delivery at the Swedish address.
EU single market access from Sweden
One reason UAE exporters target Sweden as an EU entry point is its position within the single market. Goods cleared into Sweden move freely across EU member states without further customs formalities. For businesses establishing a European distribution centre or entering the Scandinavian market, Sweden’s logistics infrastructure and its position at the edge of both Scandinavia and the broader EU make it a practical choice. We can discuss routing strategy for EU-wide distribution — whether Sweden is the right first port of entry or whether a Continental port serves the eventual delivery network better — as part of the freight planning.
Whether you are shipping a single consignment or establishing a recurring freight programme into Sweden, we run it properly. Request a freight quote and we will confirm the best routing and the customs treatment for your specific cargo.
Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to Sweden take?
Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
