Both travel further on this corridor than on any of the Gulf routes — an eight-hour direct flight from DXB to O.R. Tambo for animals, and 22 to 28 days of sea transit from Jebel Ali to Durban for vehicles — and both face specific South African entry requirements. Pets in particular need careful advance planning: South Africa’s animal import rules are detailed, and the documentation windows require that the process starts well before the move itself.

Pet relocation to South Africa: DALRRD requirements

South Africa’s Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) sets the requirements for animals entering the country, and they are specific. For dogs and cats moving from the UAE, the baseline chain runs roughly as follows: ISO-standard microchip implanted before any of the other paperwork is started, primary rabies vaccination (with a booster as required), and a FAVN rabies titer test — the rabies neutralising antibody test — conducted at a SANAS-accredited or equivalent laboratory. A minimum 30-day post-vaccination waiting period applies before the titer is valid, and the import permit itself is issued by DALRRD on application from South Africa.

An official veterinary health certificate is then issued within a very short window before departure from the UAE, alongside the import permit, and the animal flies to O.R. Tambo or Cape Town International where state veterinary inspection takes place on arrival. The requirements differ by species, and they can change — which is why working with handlers who track them is not optional. Vehicle shipping: SAPS, NRCS and eNaTIS

Shipping a car or motorcycle to South Africa from the UAE is a sea freight job. Container shipping out of Jebel Ali is the standard route and offers strong protection across the 22 to 28-day transit. Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) is available on certain sailings as an alternative for high-volume vehicle moves. At the South African end, three pieces of regulation matter:

• SAPS Police Clearance Certificate. The South African Police Service clears the vehicle’s identifying numbers against the stolen-vehicle registers; this clearance is required before registration can be completed.
• NRCS Letter of Authority. The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications issues a Letter of Authority for vehicles that are not standard OEM South African specification. Non-OEM imports — modified vehicles, models not sold new in South Africa — will require this LOA before they can be registered. Classic vehicles over a defined age threshold qualify for relief from some of these requirements; we flag the position case by case.
• eNaTIS registration. Once SAPS clearance and (where applicable) the NRCS LOA are in hand, the vehicle is registered on the electronic National Traffic Information System — the eNaTIS — and licence plates are issued.

Import duty and VAT apply at the SARS clearance stage on arrival in Durban.
